    td5 or P38 opinions please????

Lets be honest, they're all a bit of a lottery as we're talking about very old cars now. Disco TD5- getting difficult to find one that isn't terminally rusty underneath; the last few I viewed looked perfect on top but were getting very weak in the chassis o_O Also, I'm not convinced the TD5 is...

    Difficulty starting, diesel in cambelt

As James said, pump front seal has failed. Have you ever run it on biodiesel? I change them when I have a pump off unless I know it's already been done. I buy the one in the link below- Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181398341531 (Hope link works, sorry I'm on the phone)

    Best new clutch complete?

Normally I wouldn't replace the clutch slave cylinder unless it's leaking.. but on a 90/110/Defender, I would advise a new, non-Britpart cylinder while you have it all apart. The reason for this is that it's easy to disturb the clutch pushrod that operates the fork and if any of that falls out...

    Discovery advice

Do. The early cars did have some different parts, like the dashboard without the side vents. I'm sure someone on here (or ebay..) will be interested. There is a Discovery Owner's Club but I'm never sure if they're still going- their forum never seems very active.

    Steering vague ,many parts changed

I don't think anyone is expecting an old 90/110 to drive like a modern car, let alone some highly tuned Japanese boy racer thing. But in good condition they don't wander all over the road and should feel totally composed on the motorway or through the lanes. Sure they rattle and crash over the...

    Discovery advice

If it's a 1989 car, you might find someone will restore it- or at least take it on as a project. After years of zero value, the D1 is definitely starting to appreciate in value and if I were to restore one, I'd go for the oldest I could find!

Nice progress! Try Island 4x4 for the bolt kits, like this one- http://www.island-4x4.co.uk/bolt-front-suspension-bolt-britpart-fbk1-da7200-p-20003.html

    2nd Hand Tyres

I've fitted many part worn tyres to my jalopies over the years, never had any issues. Do be selective, though- there are worthwhile used tyres.. and some that just aren't worth bothering with. As above, new is best and I'm only just getting to the point where I'd rather pay out for new than...

I have straightened pushrods before... nice flat surface and LR special tool #1.

Discovery Box in a TD5 Defender, my experience

Very interesting, thanks. Our 110 (with 200Tdi) is very 'busy' at 60mph. It's the noise more than anything, you can't hear yourself think  The problem is, in our case, it's regularly towing a lot of weight- maybe 2.5 tons and I'm worried it would struggle out of junctions with the...

    Steering vague ,many parts changed

I think the swivels make a massive difference to how a 90/110/Def/Disco/RRC drives.. While they may show no play during a quick MoT-style inspection, the reality is they're probably too loose when the weight of the vehicle is on them and crashing over a rough surface. They should have some drag...

    Classic New: Car S.O.S

Yes, I must admit when I saw the 'blue box' HQ, my heart sunk a bit. The poor old girl that owns the thing will be forking out for another rebuild before the paint has hardened :D

    Discovery 1 300tdi

Looking very serious now! Have you checked the small-bore coolant hoses coming from the top of the stat housing/ rad/ exp. tank and the 3 way valve? They allow the system pressure to vent into the exp tank when the coolant heats up. Mine were thick with sludge, probably radweld :(

200tdi conversion - pics of some fiddly bits

That's looking great, nice work. You're putting me to shame, I still haven't sorted out the intercooler pipes.. I have got the rad in now though. I'm using a Defender 300 frame and modified the original 110 brackets- The driver's side one just needed a little heat & bend to...

200tdi conversion - pics of some fiddly bits

Intercooler pipework is where I'm at presently. It's a bit of a challenge to get everything sitting nicely and as 'factory' as possible. After comparing both the 200 and 300Tdi intercoolers, I think I'll use the 300 one as the lower outlet sits in a better position.

19J- is it at last dead?

We tend to have 3T trailers behind our two and the 19J was often down to 20mph up hill with a load on the back! Both are 110 CSW, one has a 200Tdi, the other - Arles Blue like yours, is a 'work in progress' ;)

Nice looking 19J, that. Mine was a little oily-er :D

19J- is it at last dead?

It's 'probably' the head gasket... but I really wouldn't waste any more time on it if it were me. I don't think I've ever seen a healthy one. I'm sure they're out there, but.. :( My 19J did 19mpg the last time I used it. I think they all suffer from worn or cracked pistons, even if they look...
