    Black Smoke P38 2.5 DSE

When you bought the car you didn't query that the V5 said auto, but its a manual? The engine is a pre-WA engine, it has an aluminium inlet manifold, these didn't have the EGR or MAF, it used other trickeries to work out fuel delivery. The XA models had a new ECU, but believe most other bits...

    Black Smoke P38 2.5 DSE

What is the model code (part of your VIN the two-letters before the last six numbers) WA?

    RR quick release tow bar

Just some good natured ribbing, no offence intended I assure you. Did you empty the fuel tank too?

    P38 2.5DT fuel starvation issues!!!

Check in-tank pump, injector leak off pipes, fuel filter, fuel lines to injector pump. The non-standard bulb means this problem is chronic and the last owner couldn't/didn't solve it.

    Black Smoke P38 2.5 DSE

In the rocker cover is the Mann-Hummell type breather valve, not an EGR valve. The EGR valves came in on the 98 MY, so you won't have one before then.

    the best oil???

CostCo have 20 litres of Chevron 10W40 to ACEA B3 for £35 at the moment, can't beat that I reckon. I found 15W40 was too much in my DSE, it runs quieter with 10W40. The Rover V8 was designed in 1935, it only needs minimum spec mineral oil!

    RR quick release tow bar

You sold your Rangie without the tow bar? That was kind of you!

    Just wondering....

If it is a roar you are hearing then this is normal when first pulling away after starting, it should disappear after a few seconds as the viscous fan distributes the oil freely and it disconnects from the hub. If the roar stays then possible the viscous fan has stuck solid and is being...

Is oil filter easy to change?

The below advice is for screw on/off filters like the one on your 4.0 V8, it different on the BMW diesel that's all. Buy a good filter wrench if you can.

    P38 dse oil leak

The Belzona I know is about £500 for a litre/kg of the stuff.

    P38 dse oil leak

There is the oil cooler and pipes around that area so it could be from that, is it engine oil leaking? Or transmission/power steering fluid which is red colour?

    superchip

The 'Superchip' isn't actually a chip at all, it is a service provided by a company called Superchips, or their ageents. They re-program your ECU with a new map. Technically it is the best solution, and also the most expensive, but you cannot remove it, you have to have them re-program to...

    squealing

How do you mean you've checked it? Have you replaced it or adjusted it? IIRC a leak in a turbo hose can cause a squeal as the air leaks out.

    p38 gearbox filter change.

I'd be tempted to leave it alone, controversial maybe, but if the box isn't giving you problems then distrubing it could cause you no end of grief. It doesn't sound like you are going to be doing high mielage with it so is it worth it?

    Tdv8

The TDV8 was developed by Peugeot for their 107 and Partner van range, but was found to be under-powered - naturally when Land Rover heard about this they thought it would be perfect in the Range Rover...

no accelleration and loss of speed uphill 2.5 dse

Check the vacuum pipe from the inlet manifold (underneath the manifold just above the oil filter) to the manifold pressure sensor (mounted on the fuel filter bracket.) If the hose is split or detached the sensor doesn't work and it limits fuel delivery, I get the same symptoms when it's popped...

    '96 P38 2.5 DSE - Fitting Front Fog Lights

Try selecting main beam with the fog light switch on, I may be mistaken but the BECM can be set-up for using the fog lights as driving lights to come on with main beam only. So you have a diesel auto but the blanking plate is solid not vented? Is there an oil cooler in front of the near side...

    Jap Import From Hell

Try another dealer, or Land Rover themselves possibly. Also keep trying with the EKA as its quite easy to get the sequence wrong, though imagine you have tried it several times already... Where did you get the 1515 code from? I take it you have an immobilised car at the moment?
