Freelander 1 Possible to do away with the VCU?

Does nothing that the Traction Control can't handle. The Freelander diff' is/was also fitted in some rear wheel drive sports car, without the TC.

    215/80 r15 will fit fine

    2" Lift

Fitting longer/stronger springs does not mean you can carry heavier loads than standard suspension, unless you get the car replated for higher gvw and axle weights like they did for the 2006MY Td4 andV6.

    Freelander rear disc conversion

LR don't seem keen on using the rear discs as the parking brake. The Evoque, and possibly the Disco Sport, being the only ones. The others have a drum brake on the transmission, or combined disc/drum rears.

Question about top hose/in-line thermostat housing

You can just bung a 'stat in the hose for a fiver. Replaced the 'stats in both my Td4's with genuine ones, both had lasted over 100k miles. http://www.island-4x4.co.uk/thermostat-genuine-pel100570l-p-3760.html

    MY01 or MY02

From 2002 they were either factory fitted as part of a winter pack option , or a dealer fit accessory.

    MY01 or MY02

Look at your VIN, 1A###### is 2001MY, 2A###### 2002MY, etc. Always use the VIN when ordering parts.

Freelander 1 What's This Lead & Plug Please?

There will also be two plugs near where the FBH is fitted, and another in the wheel arch by the fuel pump.

    Tailgate wiper parking problem.

It could be the micro switch in the door handle rather than a wiper fault. Mine doesn't go the park position but the door opens ok.

    Nearside rear indicator fault

That's for the stop and tail light not the indicator.

Freelander 1 What are these wires for?

FBH's were standard on most early Td4s, that changed to cold climate markets only, with a PTC heater fitted instead. The FBH could still be factory fitted as part of a winter pack, or dealer fitted as an accessory, so it worked out cheaper to fit the loom for it anyway(connector for fuel pump...

    Nearside rear indicator fault

Get a test meter and check you're getting 12v at the bulb connector, and a good connection to earth.

Freelander 1 IRD Speed sensor question

Would have thought the only IRD fitted with a speed sensor would be from a pre 2001 non ABS car, don't have access to my Rave discs to confirm though.

    power to interior lights

They are still wired similar. The switch on the light controls one earth path, the CCU the other.
