    P38 central locking

Sounds as though the drivers door latch is failing, this also sends the unlock signal to the tailgate

    Range rover 4.6hse 1996

I would be inclined to change the fluid and filter and this is a chaep option and see if that solves you problem. You won't be able to empty all the ATF as a fair amount will be held in the tourque convertor. Make sure everything is ultra clean when you reassemble though. If the problem...

    Stereo Error - TUN ER90

Assuming you have the code for the radio, would it be worth disconnecting it from all power and leave for a while, reseat cables, turn on and you should be prompted for the code, enter code and see what happens

    cambelt / chain

I take your point from a customer perspective and it's true to say that the media love slating Land Rover and seem to forget to mention the other 4x4 manufacturers. Odd when you consider how much good work LR do around the world, dont see that from the others. Thankfully, die hard LR owners...

    cambelt / chain

Admittedly the older 3.5 units are more reliable, as the cylinder walls are thicker due to a smaller bore but it's abit unfair to say that all later units are rubbish. From what you say, you must be making a roaring trade out of these faults so see little reason for you to complain. The original...

    cambelt / chain

What do you consider to be a laugh, I have a 4.6 which is just coming up to 152,000 miles, original engine and no problems. There are many satisfied Rover V8 owners who havent had any issues. If you take in to account the number of engines produced from 3.9 up and then see how many were actually...

    How Long Do They Last

I have a 1997 4.6 which is just coming up to 151,000 miles, still on original engine and so far, only failure has been the water pump. Regular oil changes and good quality anti freeze and flush every few years seems to keep mine running as it should. I have replaced all 4 air springs as mine...

    cambelt / chain

Chain so no worry about a cambelt snap. The chains do stretch over time and benefit from replacement of both this and the timing gears. What mileage are you currently on?

    HELP!!! p38 problem

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought this was an almost impossible job due to the BECM. From what Ianmjdun is saying, there is much more involved with the mechanics of this sort of swap out too. The BECM is supposed to be vehicle specific, i.e. not interchangeable, although I suspect it can be...

    New Rangie Owner

I would source a replacement instrument cluster as they are redily available. 1985 will mean cable driven speedo, these are known to have a shaky needle as the drive gear on the speedo wears over time. Rev counters are known to fail but check connection behind alternator cap (the black plastic...

    OEM or Pattern Parts Poll???

I tend to use a combination of both depending on what is being replaced. I always use genuine gaskets as I've had a few problems with patent ones in the past. I do most of the repairs myself unless I need some diagnostics or work carried out that I have no tools far, i.e. Air Con.

    New Rangie Owner

Can you provide more details on your Range Rover. I suspect from what you say about the rev counter that you have a Classic, what year/engine combination do you have?

range rover p38 4.0 non starter

I dont have the wiring diagram to hand just now so maybe someone can help with that, you should be able to short the two wires to bypass the switch to test this but dont try this until you have confirmation of which wires you need to check

First offroad outing - Traction Control

I believe that the TC uses the ABS system to grip the wheels to stop them spinning. As with the ABS when it is activated you will hear a clicking sound as the system applies the brakes to the wheels to keep them from slipping. Is this the noise you heard or was it something louder?

range rover p38 4.0 non starter

Is this Auto or Manual, if Auto, try putting gearshift to "N" and see if you still get no response from starter, possibly faulty inhibitor switch on gearbox. I assume you have good charge in the battery and that you have tried a socket on the crankshaft pulley to check engine turns. Starter may...

    P38 Harmon Kardon

Hi bwarb, you have the Alpine unit fitted to later version of the P38, earlier ones had Clarion units fitted. I'm sure that somone on here will be able to confirm if your square/rectangular plug shown in your earlier picture is for the standard Alpine CD changer.

    P38 Harmon Kardon

I suspect, and Wills will probably confirm, that the bracket you have is for an aftermarket unit as it looks nothing like what I have in my own HSE. It's likley that someone has added the HK door tweeters to make it appear as though that is what's fitted. I take it that the radio/cassette is...

Newbie looking for his first range rover

Bigbenson, you keep rattling on about Volvo, obviously you dont realise that the P38 and Volvo all come from the same source, FORD. Obviously you havent been to the many Volvo forums on the net either, look under XC90 and what do you see, a list of problems people are trying to solve, oh but of...

p38's are officially rubbish....dont ever buy one

Another incorrect fact of bigbenson, the EAS ECU is not under the car as claimed but inside the car under the nearside front seat, can we assume from this that the other claims he makes are also untrue?

    Arnott EAS Parts

I had Arnott Gen II springs fitted and the compressor piston and seal kit fitted earlier this year and would recommend them both. Going from standard fit (Dunlop) springs to the Arnott was a huge difference, when I collected teh vehicle from the garage, it felt as though all the bushes had been...
