    disco 4,2 and 1 HDC !

Get you diff lock fixed before you try any serious off roading, especially steep slippery hills (in either direction) What is wrong with it? The linkage is often seized if it hasn't been used, there have been a number of threads covering how to do this.

Head lights shining into the ground.

It all depends on where you are. When I lived in Hampshire I seldom got the chance to go onto main beam because of other traffic, so correctly working and well adjusted sealed beams were adequate. Now I live in North Wales with more minor roads and less traffic, main beam is more useful, so...

    Gear sticl like stirring soup

In theory all Series Land Rovers with original unmodified engines are not suitable for unleaded petrol and need an additive. Having said that, a lot of people aren't bothering. The main problem seems to be prolonged high speed running, which is why owners of classic sports cars are concerned...

Electronic Stability Programme and Traction Control

On "ordinary" cars Traction Control was fitted to help avoid wheel spin when accelerating out of corners, usually by reducing the power available. This developed into stability control, which is far more versatile, so many salesman think they are the same thing. Land Rover introduced TC to...

Can my FL go off road?

Remember the "lack" of ground clearance (look at the figures, it's not much less than a Discovery 2) so pick your line carefully, but it is surprising where they will go with care. I wouldn't choose 17's, but have have used them extensively off road.

The only spring loading on the gear change should be into reverse.

    97, is that a Discovery 1 or 2? If it's a 2, no, not without adaptors.

is this in good or bad condition?

If you're new to Land Rovers avoid "it needs some bits to finish it off. " They are probabaly the difficult bits he's been putting off.

    why does...

In my case I was lucky, it was just a poor connection onto the voltage stabiliser itself, probabaly dislodged when changing the speedo cable. I just pushed both cables on tightly, problem solved.

Just popped in for a quick question.

Probably an ACE (Active Cornering Enhancement) fault. What colour is it, red or amber? One is drivable, take to dealer, the other stop, sorry can't remember which is which.

    Gear change advice

A mix of good advice and rubbish. Just to clarify a few points: Ser II has syncromesh on 3rd and 4th, so ideally need double declutching if changing into 1st or 2nd in either direction. It is possible, with practise, to change down into 1st whilst moving. It is not necessary to be in neutral to...

    manifold question?

If it's a twin choke, it probably came off a 90/110. You could try a 90 exhaust manifold, it will fit you engine, but you will them have to work out how to connect it to your exhaust, it won't just bolt on. 90s use a throttle cable rather than a rod linkage.
