8hp has a reputation for issues in the valvebody usually pressure leaks that can cause the trans to act erratically. The priming valve in the valvebody losing fluid pressure is a favourite that can cause it to shift poorly.

rear manilfold bolt from cylinder 8 is a ball ache with the steering shaft in the way, you can drop the shaft out the way or remove the arch liner, up to you really. They're also bi hex so make sure you have the right socket before you start. hardest part of the job in my opinion is getting...

In short The flexplate is bolted to the flywheel the flexplate is what connects the engine to the torque converter, its known for them to crack/breakup. If it is broken don't drive it.

I'd drop the inspection plate off of the bottom of the bell housing and look at the flexplate..

cats breaking up do rattle. Manifold leak too can sound like an mechanical tapping.

sounds like centre bearing on the prop to me.

worth grabbing the prop and try and lift it up and down, that'll tell you the condition of the pinion bearing.
