Back to the blue smoke issue...

Just noticed this thread (sorry, been away). Had the clouds of smoke when cold problem on a TDi200. Cause was a worn keyway on the crankshaft pulley allowing the timing to go out. If all else fails, check that.

    D2 TD5 engine woes.

Unfortunately the first two are fairly common. As you will see if you do a search on this site. If you are not losing coolant you are probably OK though.

auto box does not change up under hard acceleration

In kickdown mode the box will change down and hold that gear until you ease off - at least in some cars. Can't remember if the Disco box does that. I'd have thought you should be able to rev a bit above 3500 though.

Freelander 2 HSE auto 2007 gearbox or clutch.?..

So did mine. Oil cooler pipe became disconnected. No problem once refilled with oil. If it needs a new box I trust the dealer is doing it under warranty!

Discovery 2 specs and what are autos like?

Regarding early TD5s, problems that seem to come up a lot are: cracked head, head gasket (because of the dowels), SLABS ecu (may need replacing with later one to cure 3 amigos) ABS pipes, radiator needing replacement. Haven't heard of the oil pump prob for a while - I suspect that all the dodgy...

    Buying advice help please

Forward facing seats come in with Disco 2 (99 on). You probably can't fit them to a D1 as the car is completely different. You probably don't want a D2 as they are complicated to fix compared with the older ones. If you did manage to fit forward facing seats to an earlier model I very much doubt...

    Fuel additive???

Properly made bio-diesel should not cause problems at the mix strength you quote. There are plenty of London taxis and others who run on 100% bio all the time, including winter.

    Fuel additive???

If you have a DPF filter you should use low-ash, ie semi-synthetic or better (JASO FC, ISO GC or GD). If no DPF I think any will do.

    Fuel additive???

I use it. I think the engine's a bit smoother. Not sure yet if it improves the mpg though. I think the idea of extra lube for the fuel pump is probably sound. Whether all the other claims are true I'm not sure. No-one is providing any figures. With the Td5 I could notice a definite difference...

    Fuel additive???

There's a (very) long discussion on it at freel2.com: Freel2.com - View topic - 2-stroke oil and diesel

He's right. Usually occurs because of a sloppily performed recall.

    buying guid fl2

Back to the original question, not much to add to what's been said, but bear in mind that prices vary hugely depending on the spec. The basic model comes without cruise control, even on the auto, and doesn't have terrain response. The top-end ones have leather everywhere and heated everything...

    Fuel additive???

You might find an improvement on a TD4 using BP Ultimate or a 50/50 biodiesel mix, both of which raise the Cetane rating. On Freelander 2, a lot of people swear by 0.3L of 2-stroke oil per tankful of diesel.

Anyone had problems with specific head gaskets?

    I stand corrected.

Anyone had problems with specific head gaskets?

Haven't heard of a porous one before, but they tend to crack around the exhaust valves. Unfortunately Turners are about right!

does 3 Amigos = MOT fail?????

You didn't say what model (at least, I didn't see it). On my TD5 resetting the system would usually work for a week or two before it went again. Problem was the SLABS ecu (early ones tend to fail and need upgrading).

    F2 issues

That's a good link and covers most of the options - one more annoying fault is that the ecu sometimes "forgets" to power down the electrics when parked and flattens the battery. Happened to me last week and I'm not alone. Apart from that I have a 2007 manual and it's a lovely car. I actually...

    Should I buy a freelander??

I've swapped my TD5 for a Freelander2 and like it a lot. Fuel is about 27 in town and up to 40 on a journey. It's a miles better motor than the Freelander1. I've had one of those as well and although it gave me no trouble over three years from new it wasn't a patch on the Fr2, or on the Disco TD5.
