Are you trying to fit the nipples to the UJs before installing the shaft? It's worth greasing the UJs on the bench before fitting the shaft. My grease gun came with a steel pipe between the gun and the nozzle. I also replaced that with a flexible rubber hose. That made it a lot easier working...
