Ignition short? Bad starter? The saga continues

Hmm, that's a good point. Do you know where they are physically on the vehicle?

Ignition short? Bad starter? The saga continues

Can you explain in a bit more detail what you mean?

    Starting problem after alternator swap

I've started a new fred for this: Ignition short? Bad starter? The saga continues as I now know it's nothing to do with the alternator.

Ignition short? Bad starter? The saga continues

Short version: Land Rover does not go! Here's the background (partly detailed in Starting problem after alternator swap, but I've now eliminated the alternator). A couple of weeks ago I cross-connected the battery in a perfectly understandable accident which could happen to anyone. Only...

    Starting problem after alternator swap

Well, here's the latest. I disconnected the new alternator entirely to see if the fault was still there. It was. So that eliminates the alternator. I checked the wiring coming from the battery with the meter. Attached to the positive battery clamp, there is a fat brown cable which I'm assuming...

    Starting problem after alternator swap

Tried again with freshly-charged battery today - voltage drops to ~5V when I turn the ignition on (not to start position). So there is a major short somewhere. Looks like I'll have to get the wiring diagrams out and trace the cables...

    Starting problem after alternator swap

No, I'll try that, but at the moment I can't even see the starter, never mind get to it :D Is it easier to get to from underneath?

    Starting problem after alternator swap

I just had another check with the meter across the battery, and when you turn the key, the voltage drops to about 8/9 volts. So it looks like current is reaching the starter, but it's just not doing anything!

    Starting problem after alternator swap

Well, I did that - everything looks OK with the wiring, I can't see any obvious shorts or signs of burning or damage. The only thing I'm not sure about is the connections to the alternator. There were three wires on the old one: two thick brown ones and a thin brown and yellow one. I'm assuming...

    Starting problem after alternator swap

I tried it again with a charged battery and not only did it not work, it immediately flattened the battery! So I'm pretty sure there's a short somewhere - if the alternator B+ connection is shorting to earth, that would probably explain it. I had to cut the plug off the old alternator and...

    Starting problem after alternator swap

It's going clickclickclickclickclickclickclick... The engine did turn over once or twice, briefly, when I first tried it, and I could see that the alternator belt had moved because I marked it. But now, nothing, which makes me lean towards electrical issues rather than a mechanical failure - I...

Getting the asking price down !!!!

I drove a car once from a dealer and judging by the terminal clunking and backlash the prop shafts were about to fall out. I asked him about replacing the UJs and he said, "It's not in my interest to do that unless you agree to buy it - the next bloke to test drive it might not notice and then...

    Starting problem after alternator swap

Thanks for that. Today's mission will be to check the wiring (since I can hear the solenoid working, it's possible there could be no current to the starter motor itself) and see if I can move the car in gear to make sure that the engine turns freely and I haven't dropped a spanner in there or...

    Starting problem after alternator swap

I put a new (70A) alternator in the car and tried starting it. The starter turns, but the engine doesn't crank - there's just a high-speed clicking noise. I wondered if the battery was too flat to turn the engine, so I jump-started it. Same result. I then wondered if the alternator belt was...

What have you done to your Landie today.

Nice new Spafax unbreakable convex mirror, to replace the crappy Britpart one that fell off. This is much more solid, and I've got an excellent view and less blind spot! Also, new rear door lock assembly and barrel fitted. The old one was so worn you could turn the lock with a 10p coin, and...

oil leak From transfer box, should i actually be worried?? or is it one of...

Welcome to the brotherhood! :) A few drips is nothing to worry about. Keep the various oil holes topped up at the service intervals and you'll be fine. Have a good look at the tank (from underneath and through the panel under the driver's seat) and check for any corrosion. If there's just a...
