I have just added a 1988 pre defender 90 2.5 petrol to my stable of 2 series 3. There is a good free download for parts and workshop manuals for series vehicles, is anyone aware of similar for the 90.

It did have a thermostat and it was stuck. Thank you tot tot.

Yes, full of water. Think I might have found the backfire problem, I think the distributor had moved round by 45 degrees, I’m assuming that would make it backfire? Strange that it ran well right up to the end of the journey.

I’ve just taken my newly restored petrol series 3 for a 5 mile run. It ran really well but on return it is making massive backfires and emitting black smoke. I also noticed that the engine is very hot but the radiator cold. Any Ideas?

Thank you, funnily enough the 73 is much nicer to drive so perhaps I’ll just take your advice and enjoy a summer and winter drive.

Is there anyone in North Cornwall, I’m in the Bodmin Wadebridge area, who could spend an hour or so to drive my two series 3. Over the past 3 years I have completely rebuilt a 73 and a 74. My problem is that they both drive differently with different noises and not having driven either before...

I have rebuilt a series 3 hardtop which had a perforated vinyl headlining in the cab. Having made a new lining and metal inserts I am struggling with the forward fixings on the windscreen. I would really appreciate detailed photos of the L shaped bracket positions and the curve at each front...

I have bought 2 bulkheads from Robert owen in the last 3 years and fitted them to Richards chassis. They are perfectly matched to that chassis and I would highly recommend them despite the wait. I had to do absolutely no fettling or alterations.

Just to check, should the white /red from the solenoid be on the same terminal as the white that goes via the fuse to the alternator and the distributor?

I have rebuilt a series 3 2.25 88” . I replaced the wiring loom, alternator but left the engine as it runs very well. On starting it never fires while cranking but consistently starts as the key is released and runs perfectly thereafter. Is this normal or have I made wrong connections somewhere?
