    200 disco as a commuter ?

I said medium hatchback, not small. So something the size of a VW Golf or Ford Focus, not a supermini like Fiesta or Polo. The medium hatchback would have better: comfort, cruising ability and safety. Only a little less space, and yes the visibility is better on a 4x4. Move up to a hatchback...

    200 disco as a commuter ?

Any 4x4 is a rubbish commuting car, not from the reliability but from the fuel consumption point of view. Can you afford to pay 50-100% more than a medium hatchback for fuel? Discoveries can be as reliable as any other car, so long as you keep on top of maintenance. Its going to be 18 years old...

300TDi valve clearances, fan cowling, coolant, etc...

I'm pretty sure you don't need to remove the fan to turn the engine over on the crank pulley nut. I reckon you can get a bar and socket in from underneath.

Nope, didn't understand a word of that!

    disco altinator

Its pretty easy if the bottom bolt isn't seized, mine was! Turned into an epic fix, needed to remove a lot of other components (coolant pipe, intercooler, fan, fan cowl, etc) to get a proper grinder into there after I'd worn out a Dremel and broke another. Even so, that bottom bolt is quite...

    Hub locknut size?

The stub axle is probably now scrap if the bearing has broken up, in which case a Dremel grinder on the inside, should be able to grind away a groove down the length of it, thus allowing it to bend to a smaller size when you hammer off the hub. Have you tried a normal hammer or a slide hammer?

    Jacking body away from chassis

To get the downpipe out easier, you can drop the FRONT AXLE relative to the CHASSIS. Jack up on the front axle, then place axle stands between the ground and chassis, and then let the front axle drop. If you need more clearance, then a bottle jack in the obvious place would create a little more.

    land rover engiene flooding

Speaking from experience, what tends to happen is the filter gets soaked with silt/water and strangles the engine causing it to stall, before enough water is ingested into the cylinders to acutally hydraulic it. So, you might be lucky....fingers x'd.

    land rover engiene flooding

Remove the air filter. Disconnect the turbo-intercooler pipe and drain any water out that might have found its way in here. Remove the glowplugs, disconnect the fuel stop solenoid and turn the engine over on the starter for about 30 secs or so. Then refit the glowplugs and try again. If it...

    Tyres on disco 1

Pragmatically, probably not, but AFAIK no manufacturer ever fitted differently sized tyres each side of their car; and different sizes on the same axle is an MoT failure too (reason for rejection 4.1.1). Given that the original poster is looking to buy a new tyre to replace a worn-out one, I...

    Tyres on disco 1

What do you mean by "the tyre company doesn't bother/worry with it"? They do bother - they sell tyres in both 225/70R16 and 235/70R16 sizes.

    Poly Bushes

Advantage: they don't deteriorate Disadvantage: they're stiffer, so they limit suspension flexibility compared to rubber bushes. Apparently someone is developing a polybush that's soft like rubber, but I don't know any more details on them or whether they're (widely) available yet.

    Tyres on disco 1

Wrong, they're taller too - the profile is the SAME, the width is 10mm more so the circumference MUST be slightly more. Not much though, but enough to make a difference.

Sounds like fuel pump timing is out.

Will Power Steering Pump work either way round..?

Why don't you make life simple for yourself and fit the correct pump, the right way round?

    gotta check

If its a 300TDI like your avatar pic suggests, and a manual box then it will have an R380 gearbox. If so, then the drain is 32mm spanner, and the refill T55 Torq. (My memory might be failing me, just do a search to check those tools cos I'm only about 90% sure!)
