I've fabricated my own winch mount - thoughts please!

That's the one! I made the plate up for his also - he had a design already though, and we made it out of 6mm, just a flat plate but it's bolted down in all sorts of places. Got outselves stuck using it last time we went out (before I installed my winch!) Had the s1 strapped to a tree at...

That's very tidy mate, I like it! :)

Managed to keep control when under pressure

It's everything I love about the older landrover. If something breaks, its normally fixable with a multi tool. I don't drive my landrover without my leatherman! :D Its just little things - the other day I fixed my brake light switch, because you can take it apart and clean it! Any new car and...

    Goodbye 90, hello 110 project

I've got a black truck cab and in the recent sunny weather I have been sweltering. Had to take the roof off. Doesn't help having black vinyl seats as well!:eek::eek:

I've fabricated my own winch mount - thoughts please!

Nice! You have instilled some confidence in my own design! I should probably swap my bolts for high tensile though, only had 8.8s at work.... :p Standard ones from the bumper are 8.8 but I managed to bend a couple being snatched out of a mud hole at Slindon Safari using only one D-ring... But I...

I've fabricated my own winch mount - thoughts please!

Quick question mate - From the picture I guess the winch is mounted to the tray, which has been made into the bumper, and then bolted through standard bumper mounts. Have you done anything else to secure it, or do you think that this is enough? I'm not sure whether to add more fixings to mine...

I've fabricated my own winch mount - thoughts please!

This was my issue. I couldn't find any that didn't stick out more that standard bumper. I've had to cut the grille on mine, but in my eyes it was worth it to keep my approach angle. I think I'd catch my winch all the time if it stuck out any more! :P

I've fabricated my own winch mount - thoughts please!

I'm gonna have to work lots of overtime! But that's the plan... I need to get a cage first though, I can see myself rolling it soon. :D

That's nice mate - You've kept it tight to the front still! But as we all know, those extra 2 inches can be what makes the difference... ;) haha

I've fabricated my own winch mount - thoughts please!

That's the long term plan! I'm just restricted by funds at the moment. Rope is also much lighter so when unreeling it doesn't take so much effort! :P My mrs is gonna moan when she has to drag my cable winch across some mud to a tree! :D:D

I've fabricated my own winch mount - thoughts please!

Winch is far enough away from my rad not to ruin it. My winch has the bars across the top that will get hit by the cable before it reaches my radiator. And that was my original trail of thought - pull myself out the way I went in! Ahh well too late now! Its a very good excuse to justify...

I've fabricated my own winch mount - thoughts please!

My dad has a fairy winch on his S1 - the plate on his is only 6mm though.. mines 12. I still agree that it's be worth doing those bolts up though... better than pulling my winch off in the middle of a forest haha

I've fabricated my own winch mount - thoughts please!

Now for the jump... You'll see I've added a plate to the front of the base plate, this is to mount the fairlead on, and to protect the winch from the inevitable bashing. Its at a slight angle to account for the bolts that stick out the back. I have also welded a plate at the back...

I've fabricated my own winch mount - thoughts please!

To fit the winch as far back as I wanted to, I had to cut into my grille, and surround... Marked out - using the winch and plate for reference. Broke the grinder out, and cut (much to my reluctance) the radiator surround. First bit of my landy I've cut - I'm still a little broken...

This is a picture of the main plate - the one that'll be taking all the strain from the winch. Unfortunately for you readers, I got rather carried away after making the first plate, and actually finished the winch plate before I took any more pictures... But here it is anyway!

I've fabricated my own winch mount - thoughts please!

Next was to take some measurements, and do myself a CAD drawing - a perfect way to play around with different ideas, and a good way to check everything fits, without actually making anything. I have all my drawings, including measurements etc so you could make your own if you wanted. Or pay...

Right - first was remove bumper! Must have been loosing MPG with all that Slindon Safari mud in my bumper!

I've fabricated my own winch mount - thoughts please!

Morning All! I bought myself a winch, and was originally going to mount it on the back, between the chassis rails. After chatting with a few people, I decided to mount it on the front... main reason for this is because I drive forward into mud, and normally need to get out the other side...

Can you get a reliable decent Defender without having to pay over £8000

Hello mate, I've not read through the whole topic - but i'm 21 and have a 1989 90inch converted to a 200tdi disco engine... I got her insured as a standard for £300 fully comp. Worth a look for an older one as there are plenty about already converted - and if you are mechanically minded you...

    Articulation problem

Nice! Whats she like on the road, and have you got a pic of how it mounts on the axle? Gonna fab some up when I get my garage... And welder... Can't really sneak a landrover axle into the workshop at work hahaha :D:D
