    Series 3 Jack Stop

Yeah - I've seen that in various places too, but I think that is a mistake, because the steering stop brackets are clearly these things (508175): The jack stop does not get involved in the steering at all. As far as I can make out, it just hangs down below the axle and gets bashed on rocks...

    Series 3 Jack Stop

Been rebuilding front axle on my S3 shorty. PO have abused everything, so there are a lot of new parts going in. In the parts book I found part number 90519206 which is described as a jack locator stop. Is this there just to help you put the jack in the right place and not damage the bottom...

Series 3 Front Half Shafts - Inner bearing and distance piece

Yes - Good point. Much harder to get to than on the prop shaft, so I'll order the correct unit. Thanks Andrew

Series 3 Front Half Shafts - Inner bearing and distance piece

Yes - I had a good go with the shafts in the lathe and giving it the beans with some coarse emery/fine emery/wire wool but really didn't make much of an impression. Must be reasonable steel! The earlier photos make it look better than it actually is. So - I've decided to cut the collars off...

Series 3 Front Half Shafts - Inner bearing and distance piece

Stripped down the front axle today and opened up some blue boxes of Land Rover loveliness, only to find that the Britpart swivel kit does not include the inner bearing, oil seal or distance piece! Damn, damn. More postage..... My half shafts (pictured) have some pitting and corrosion on the...

    pre and post galvanizing advice

Did they change every thread on the vehicle at that point, or are post-1980 models a typical hotchpotch of imperial and metric fixings? I'm thinking it'd be a fair job to change the tooling for every thread.

    pre and post galvanizing advice

Sorry - Should've clarified that. Mine are UNF. It's a 1976. I guess the metric change point was around 1980? Cheers Andrew

Windscreen hinge bolts are 1/4" UNF 28 TPI. (Same as the relay retainer ring!) Cheers Andrew

Series 3 109 Rear Brakes - Snail Cams

The only adjusters on these brakes are the snail cams. See photos of the bare backplates above. There's nothing else there to adjust! Will see if it all works when I get the rest of the car back together......

Series 3 109 Rear Brakes - Snail Cams

Yep - That's all making quite a bit more sense now. Looking back at the thread, I should have said the springs are supposed to be located on the backplate side of the shoe, exactly as shown in Citizen Kane's photos, and not as shown in my photo. I believe the correct spring mounting has the...

    pre and post galvanizing advice

I galv'd all the steel panels/parts on my landie and just used a bog standard tap to run through the threads afterwards. I made no effort to keep the zinc out. The only one that gave a little drama was one of the steering relay locator ring bolts. But it was an easy fix. I drilled it...

Series 3 109 Rear Brakes - Snail Cams

But now I've had another search and found these photos. (Thanks John Richards Surplus!) The two part numbers are 531889 (RHS) and 531888 (LHS). Firstly 531888 (LHS - So passenger side in UK and here in NZ). Looking from outside inwards. Front of car is to left of picture. Note snail cams...

Series 3 109 Rear Brakes - Snail Cams

So - I've done one side. Now I go to the other side and I'm looking at the snail cams and wondering if they are pointing the correct way. Found this photo on the web. Supposedly a pair of backplates. This seems to show the snails pointing the same way, despite the backplates being handed LH...

Series 3 109 Rear Brakes - Snail Cams

No - she has got an ENV rear axle and a Military Spec Rover one up front. So it's a right mish mash really. The 11" brakes may have come with the ENV rear axle, or might be a later addition. I'm not sure if the ENV rear axles ever came with the 10" brakes as standard. That axle may be off a...

Series 3 109 Rear Brakes - Snail Cams

Thanks for the prompt replies guys. The shoes on the 109 are handed in that there is one leading and one trailing shoe per side. Got that bit sorted. Don't think there is a difference LH vs RH as far as I can see. Either way they wouldn't fit, being incorrect by the thickness of the adjuster...

Series 3 109 Rear Brakes - Snail Cams

I'm reassembling my rear brakes (11" SLS) and find that the web of the shoe fouls the snail cam. I took the snail cams off when I had the backplates galvanised and I have a dreadful feeling that I have reassembled them incorrectly. In my current setup, working from the inside out, I have the...

Series 3 Brake back plates - Orientation

Hi guys - thanks for replies. Sorry I have been away and didn't see them. I was wondering about the front axle and its history, as it didn't look the same as others I have seen. The car is not ex military AFAIK, but it could have acquired a mil axle at some stage. In the end I mounted the rear...

Series 3 Brake back plates - Orientation

The truck is a recent acquisition - been a farm vehicle for about twenty years before I got it. Abused to hell - everything worn. The brakes were terrible! Consequently I'm pretty keen on getting them right when they go back together! :-) Cheers Andrew

Series 3 Brake back plates - Orientation

I am reassembling my rear axle on my 88" rebuild: ENV differential, (not sure how relevant that is, but there you are). 11" single leading shoe brakes (a PO had these on the back, with 10" on the front! I am fitting Heystee discs up front and leaving the 11" on the back, with a pressure...

Series 3 Steering relay - Brand new, but too stiff

Thanks for those figures, Blackburn. I checked my books and depending on which author we believe there are several different options ranging from 12 to 27lb. I agree, being a new unit it should be at the upper end of the spectrum. Haynes said 12-16, but I'll go with the official manual...
