    16" or 18" tyres

'Cos the law says so! Unless it has changed in the last few years, Construction and Use regs are that wheel/tyre combinations have to be at least as large as the OEM fitting.

    16" or 18" tyres

Don't forget that whatever you fit, the overall diameter must be at least as large as the original fitment. Bigger is fine, but smaller and you run into potential legal hassles.

    Scared from Bristol!

    Rover wiring isn't Italian! :)

    Scared from Bristol!

Don't get a Forester. They are great cars, but soulless. A Rover will be as rewarding as a dog (there's a reason for the name...). Treat it right, and it will be as loyal as a Collie. Treat it wrong, and it will bite you in the arse...

How does the diff lock work?

I'm pretty certain it's mechanical. Is the spigot turning on the top of the box? What happens if you turn the input shaft?

    Scared from Bristol!

Hi Paul, fugitive from Bristol here :) Which end are you? I'd say go for it. I've had my Disco 2 for almost two years trouble-free, and I knew the previous owners had no problems either for ten years. TBH at this stage, the really crap ones have died, and what is left is the best of the...

becker sat nav not reading disc

You can also play them in the head unit (I have one of them in my Disco 2), it's a good way to test if the laser is working.

    Classic 3 door

I wouldn't say they were rare - all factory RRs were three door until the mid '80s. So it's very likely the Royal family had several.

    auto vs manual

I wouldn't have an auto Defender, however.

    auto vs manual

Well, a Disco was made for both off-roading AND cruising motorways, so yeah, I use it to the full extent of its design ;)

    auto vs manual

I only left the UK 10 years ago, so I know what the roads are like ;). That said, if the motorways are as stop-start as you say, it's another reason to get an auto!

    auto vs manual

Yes, bear in mind I'm in Switzerland :) That said, I had a mate with a manual Tdi Disco 1, and when it hit a hill with the CC on all that happened was clouds of black smoke.

    auto vs manual

True, a manual gives you better control. That said, I've known plenty of drivers with manuals who have no idea what the relationship between revs, torque and speed are, and plenty of auto drivers (myself included) who do. As I said, if you are using cruise control (and I tend to do mostly...

    auto vs manual

Only if you don't know how to drive! There's a long steep motorway hill near my home (5km at about 12%, or 1:8) which I regularly drive in my Auto V8 without touching the brakes. Select 3 or 2 and let the engine do the work. I wouldn't want a manual now. Town or motorway, auto is excellent -...

    Hawkeye, lynx or Nanocom?

You can program keys and the suspension fob with just the internal serial number using a Nano, you need the full barcode for Hawkeye. I think that's the only major difference since Nano was updated to talk to the ABS ECU better.

discovery 2 facelift front fog lamp removal

There is what looks like a spade clip next to the fog lamp hole, and the top panel has two stepped clips also. Press down on the top (under the headlamp) and pull forward and towards the outer corner.
