    Whats going on

The big thick washer can rotate against the flat in the stub axle as you tighten the nut and wedge itself, giving the impression the nut has bottomed. Take the nut off and make sure the washer is free. You might need to clean the thread on the stub axle if its done that.

    compare MPG please

I've had 2 300TDI's and they both do about 28mpg. Lots of short runs push it up, best I ever got was a run across Ireland (not much traffic and no motorways so generally about 50mph) which delivered 36mpg. Long motorway run to Pembroke from London with 4 people and 4 sets of diving kit and doing...

    lookin' for a friendly helper

Probably the first time its ever been said about a 2.5 N/A but isn't that a bit overpowered? For a narrow boat anyway. Most of them seem to run 1.5 BMC's

    Rear Differential Pinion Seal

It is just a push fit and it is an awkward little sod. If memory serves, it takes an M6 or M8 bolt. I cobbled together a puller and heated the hell out of it. Slide hammer might help with the heat. Or maybe use a long bit of studding bent into a loop and use a ratchet strap onto somewhere on the...

    Power problem (300Tdi)

If the air filter got wet, it might have knackered it. Did you change it before or after you got it wet? It's possible the engine might have ingested some water. Just enough to cause a hydraulic and bend a push rod or valve. Its unlikely but could happen. Check all the valve clearances. Anything...

bolts snapped on outer casing of my drive shaft help

Thats right. Once the head has sheared off, the thread thats left has no tension on it. Providing its not too badly rusted in, you should be able to punch it round. Once you've got it unscewed a couple of threads, grip it with some mole grips and wind it out.

bolts snapped on outer casing of my drive shaft help

We had the same thing on our Defenders. All the bolts came out by gently tapping them round with a hammer and a small chisel/punch. Once the heads have sheared off, whats left may be surpisingly loose. Give it a try, you might be surprised.

aluminum rivets and galvanic corrosion on disco body panels.

If you put different metals together you will always get some sort of electrolytic corrosion. Stainless steel and ali can be pretty bad. You can get a paste called Duralac which stops the corrosion.

    300 tdi cluch problem

Common problem. The ball joint has worn through the clutch fork. Someone has then tried to bleed the system thinking its a hydraulic problem and its then gone solid. If you think about it, apart from the master and slave cylinders which you could strip and check (and I have never heard of a...

    Handling problem

Thanks guys. Much as I thought its a case of getting under and having a good heave around. Steering damper though. Wouldn't you expect to get a lot of feedback through the steering wheel? Worth changing anyway though. As you say, its an easy and cheap fix.

    Handling problem

Mate of mine has a 300tdi 98 model. The other day his girlfriend was driving it on a dual carriageway ~ 60mph inside lane. For no reason, car developed a speed wobble and in the end she hit the central barrier. Mangled wing etc but nothing too serious luckily. The handling has been vague to say...

    Cooking oil in TD5

Diesel Bug is not restricted to veg oil mixes. We get it in the boats all the time. Most boat yards keep biocide of various sorts. Half of them promise to re-dissolve the contamination but I don't believe it. They will at least kill it. Once its there though, unless you can steam clean the tank...

    no drive

R380 boxes are prone to wearing out the splines on the gearbox output shaft. You then lose drive between the gearbox and transfer box. Usually means a re-con gearbox. I believe you can check them by taking the round plate off the back of the transfer box and having a look at the gear and shaft...

    Battery voltage test.

12V alternator would be hard pressed to put out 36V. Had a regulator fail on a Frontera a and it was putting out about 18V which over about 15 miles trashed the battery completely. Bear in mind, the difference between a 12V and 24V alternator isn't just the regulator. Must be a measurement problem.

    Superwinch tiddler

I sell trailer winches for boats and a reasonable quality 1200lb winch will be about £25-£30 without the strap/wire. The cheap ones will strip the ratchet which you will find out about when you let go of the handle under load. To get the car back in the garage I would chem-set a ring bolt into...

    3rd battery

If you connect 2 batteries in parallel and they are identical in condition and type then no problem. If one battery develops a fault it will then drag the one it is connected to down. If you want 3 batteries, I would either get a 3 way blocking diode fed from the alternator with one outlet to...

    Transfer box linkage

But the linkage is a bit different. Have a look inside the housing on the top where all the linkage goes into. On Defenders, there's a grub screw which comes loose. Clean it up and loctite it. With a bit of luck it'll solve your problem. You can get at it from under the centre front seat if...

    TD5 engine change

We run a pair of 110's. Ones a 200, the others a 300. Both going to need replacement soon and due to LEZ will need to be post 2002. (notwithstanding Boris getting the next phase cancelled. Good man!) A local Landy specialist who my boss tends to use has told her that the TD5 is a rubbish engine...

    diesel fuel gelling

The bacteria is usually called diesel bug. It doesn't cause the diesel to gel but appears as black slimy snot that blocks the filters. Theres lots of different biocides that will kill it and some will allegedly dissolve it but I'll believe it when I see it. Usually treat the fuel and clean the...
