    Engine won't turn over???

Does sound like the battery. Remember, you can have a good voltage on the battery with no load and that drops to nothing once you start to crank if the battery has a dud cell etc. If the electrics are all OK then possibly you have a hydraulic lock. Water or maybe diesel. May explain the jerky...

    help help

Inside the transfer box linkage mechanism on the top, there are a couple of grub screws. I've had them come loose before. Degrease, loctite and do them up again. Linkages tend to feel a bit sloppy before they finally work loose enough to disengage though.

    Tyres

I've got Maxxis 245/75/16 AT's on my TD5 Disco. They seem OK re noise, road holding etc. Can't comment on off-road ability. On the car when I bought it. Funny as I was just about to post the question re whether they would be heavier on fuel than the standard 235/70/16 Pirelli Scorpions as I've...

How much fuel are you using

Used to average ~28 and most of that was crawling into London in traffic. Best was 36 driving across Ireland. All A roads, pretty constant 50mph. If you're getting 18 I would give it a good service and maybe try some injector cleaner before adjusting the pump. Wish my current TD5 was as good...

    Ancillary Belt Squeeling TD5

Yep, same problem on mine. Broken stud on the exhaust manifold. Somebody on here described it as sounding like a dentists drill. On a cold running engine, sprayed around the manifold with WD40 and you could see the bubbles. Only broke one extra stud getting the manifold off so had 2 to drill out...

Need a new clutch and poss flywheel?

Quoted £450 excluding the flywheel for mine from local clutch centre which seemed reasonable and £1200 inc the flywheel from local 4x4 specialist which didn't. Was told that "its a really awkward job on a TD5 thats why we always do the flywheel as well". Don't see why its any more difficult than...

Sedimenter is in a right state

Stop solenoid is on the injection pump. Before you try anything else, try running a pipe from the engine bay filter (or lift pump, whichever is nearer the tank) to a can of diesel, then try priming it up and see if it works. From what you are saying, there seems to be a problem with the fuel...

    disco vibration

Pull the half shaft and then check for movement in the wheel bearing. Had the same problem and its difficult to feel much with the half shaft in place. You only need to move it out a few mm.

    Alternator Load Effecting Idle

I know the idea of upping the idle speed a bit seems to be bodging your way round the problem, but is the idle speed actually set right to start with? If it has been set a bit low then any increased load at idle would cause the engine to struggle. You need an accurate way of measuring it. Laser...

    electrical teaser

Does sound like an earth since the only thing they all have in common is the earth return. Turning main beam on could be causing a voltage drop generally affecting the stop solenoid, hence engine cuts. Other possibility could be the main battery feed to the fuse box. Don't know 200tdi's...

    Steering box

If there's enough movement to cause the nut to loosen even with the tab washer in place, I think you need to look closely at the splines. There must be a fair bit of wear. Bear in mind that to get the arm off the broken shaft in the photo, we put it in the press, jacked it up to 8.5 tonnes...

    Here's the problem.

    Steering box

Just parked our Disco 1 at work when the steering wheel decided to revolve continuously without turning the wheels. The shaft appears to have dropped out of the bottom of the box and landed on the tie bar. I've seen boxes leak, make noises or feel bad but I've never seen this happen. Any ideas...

    creaking steering

Standard Disco problem. The fluid flowing in the PAS hoses sets up a harmonic vibration. Not definite that thats your problem but both my Discos did it. There is a service bulletin about it on the Rave manual somewhere. If thats it then not a problem. Just annoying.

    Replacement Seats for a Defender

We did one of our defender seats with a re-trim kit from Paddocks. Seemed to work OK. Assuming the frame is OK

    black diesel ???

Every time I see black diesel, I assume its diesel bug. Get it all the time on boats but unusual on cars because the fuel doesn't sit in the tank for long. You can get biocide treatment for it but I would carry a spare filter because if thats what it is then it will block the filter...

    bought td5 today loosing coolant..HELP!

Mine did this. First I noticed was no heating because the coolant level had dropped. Hole at bottom of radiator. Saw it with the top fan cowling removed. Really needs a new radiator but some radiator sealant fixed the problem. Temporarily at least

Broken drill bit in cylinder head.

He did say he was told to use grease to catch the swarf so reasonable to assume he was advised to do it in situ. The grease trick is one of those wonderful old techniques that never works properly. Should get the head off and have a look. If he's lucky a big bit has locked it at TDC and he can...

    Tweeting Squeeking

Had the same problem with my TD5 Disco. Just spent half of today replacing exhaust manifold gasket. Also 2 broken studs. One already broken and one broke when taking it off. Already replaced belt, tensioner and idler. I might start a survey on how much money people have spent on parts that didn't...
