    Swarfega or something better?

Used to use this stuff from Wurth. Best hand cleaner I know but the boss thought it was too expensive. Green swarfega isn't bad but you need to use hand cream otherwise your skin falls off. http://www.wurth.co.uk/catalogue/pdfs/UK-CD_11_0015.pdf

    Help ACE res empty

Pipes are awkward sods to get at and new pipes are 2 piece rather than original 1 piece. You can join the pipes with 10mm compression fittings. Messed around for ages with mine trying to seal up joint where the pipe fitted into the manifold under the drivers seat and eventually found the leak...

300tdi Will it fail mot if cat is removed

Its not a daft question since the MOT rules have just changed. My MOT centre said my TD5 will fail its next MOT as a result of the new rules coming in this year. If it was originally fitted with a Cat then it has to have it. There seems to be some discussion about whether the rules really apply...

    36mm spanner in winchester??

make sure your "squealing belt " is not in fact a leaking exhaust manifold gasket. Common TD5 problem.

    Electrical system failure

A bad earth to the engine can mean that the handbrake cable becomes the engines earth. Possibly, it has been like this for a while and has nearly burn't through. I think this has been raised a few times before so a search might come up with more info.

    cold discovery

It's a viscous fan so it will spin all the time. When the temperature gets high enough, the viscous unit locks the fan, otherwise it just gets dragged along with the pulley. With the engine stopped, it should turn fairly freely but with some resistance. If it's locked up with a cold engine, the...

    Disco owner again!

By middle box replacement pipe, I assume you mean to de-cat the exhaust? Bear in mind the MOT rules have just changed and you will have to put it back on for the MOT. And I also thought the TD5 came out in 99.

    Engine noise

Same problem on mine. Described as sounding a bit like a dentists drill. Found it by spraying wd40 around the gasket and you can see it blowing bubbles. It had one broken stud and I broke one other getting it out so I would expect to have to deal with broken studs whether you've got them or not.

To buy or not to buy...

On reflection, if your doing hardly any mileage so running costs are not really an issue, the cheapest option is probably a V8 disco and spec the tyres up. I am assuming you are launching on decent slipways and not off beaches.

To buy or not to buy...

Its not "utter tosh". I'm telling you what we have actually experienced. I don't think the power has anything much to do with it and I didn't say it had.As far as I know they're all pretty much the same. Its all about traction. all the vehicles are using pretty standard tyres but I suspect that...

To buy or not to buy...

We tow boats around a lot and we have a 110 defender and a disco. Both with 300tdi's. The Disco is nicer to drive but the Defender is a better tow car. Especially pulling boats up and down slips. Where the defender will pull a 2.5ton boat out no problem, the Disco will struggle. we rarely need...

    TD5 radiator

Yes, I've beaten the crap out of it and it's just laughing at me. But, is it possible to do the job with the fan in place? Somebody please say yes. Failing that, its off to difflock for their special spanner and locking tool.

    TD5 radiator

I think I already know the answer to this but I hope someone knows otherwise. Is it possible to change the radiator on a TD5 without removing the fan? Can't move the bloody thing and yes I am trying to undo it the right way.

110" discovery , has it been done

Saw somewhere on here quite a while ago a D1 that had been stretched to take an extra row of seats and i think it had another pair of doors as well. Think it had been made for an oil company.

New MOT changes in the pipeline HELP!!!

I bet they can change the rules. If they decide we all have to re-fit our EGR systems then we'll just have to bite the bullett. After all, look at the Low Emission Zone. Lot of older vans etc. suddenly become scrap. Not as bad as Japan though. All those re-imported Disco's due to changes in...

    Insurance for my td5.

Renewal on mine (same age car etc)going through the comparison sites is around £370.00 I'm 48 and I live in a fairly low risk area. Offstreet parking every night. Interesting looking at the list of quotes you get on the comparison sites, the prices for me range all the way up to £1100.

300 tdi Engine can idle but cant rev up with Air Con On

I would think he's got the cam belt fitted wrong. One or two teeth out would probably let it run but if the pump timing is out, no power. Running the aircon is enough load to stop it revving up at all. Get him to check the timing.

    ACE pipe

I know I'll need new O rings but unfortunately I have to change the pipe. The fracture is on the ridge that engages with the collet. Its such a clean break it almost looks machined. I suspect that was the leak all along. Presumably when the ridge is formed, the metal must get thinner at that...

    ACE pipe

After several unsuccesful attempts at sorting out a leaking ACE pipe on the valve block on my 2000 TD5 I have just had another go at it. Cut the pipe this time and joined it with a compression joint. Got the O rungs nicely seated etc. Put it all back together and its now flooding out. Pull the...

"Not your usual" question about LPG...

Octane rating is a theoretical rating of the anti-knock properties of a fuel. the number is a percentage of what would be achieved with pure octane (there isn't any actual octane in petrol anyway). The octane rating hasn't got anything to do with the actual power output of the fuel. I believe...
