can you legally tow a range rover on a trailer

One small point. If you haven't done much towing before, give it a try somewhere quiet first. It can be a bit scary to say the least towing a 3500kg load with a 2000kg vehicle if your not used to it. You tend to get a slight feeling that you are not quite in control. I do think that getting...

    300Tdi Problems

17mpg is pretty close to V8 consumption. Even for an auto you should be getting mid 20's. As mentioned above, good service and if its still bad, start looking deeper. And by the way, if you're going to take the fan off, keep it in the car. Combination of traffic jam, hot day and towing a heavy...

can you legally tow a range rover on a trailer

The maximum you can tow with overrun brakes on any normal vehicle is 3500kg subject to the manufacturers rating. thats why the maximum weight of trailer and load you will see plated on the trailer is 3500kg. The capacity of the trailer will then be 3500 less the weight of the trailer. For close...

    Quick alternator ampage question

RAC man sounds about right. Voltage is a bit low and so is the output assuming a 45 Amp alternator. If you are doing a lot of short trips with a slightly faulty alternator then you are going to end up with a flat battery. It never gets a proper charge. Get a good battery on it and see what...

confused feul injector and hyrdrolics what do they have in comon

I think someone is suggesting that an injector is leaking so badly that it's filling the cylinder up with diesel and causing a hydraulic lock. You can't compress a fluid. You could take the glow plugs out, get someone to crank the engine over while you watch (don't look down the holes while they...

Anti sieze goo / anti corrosion paste

Duralac. Specifically for marine use so will work fine on a Landy. We don't EVER use copperslip for marine use. Can cause serious problems on aluminium.

What's the one thing you would change about the design of a Defender?

All of the above and one small item. Decent build quality!! They've been building them long enough. You'd have thought they would have got it right by now.

    Land Rover aluminium corrosion protection.

Don't know how well it would work on a vehicle but we use them on Mercruiser sterndrives on boats. System is called Mercathode and it does work. Same principle as sacrficial anodes but does it electronically. Claims about stopping corrosion completely I wouldn't believe but it will certainly...

    Charging system

If the battery warning light does not come on at all, it could mean the warning light bulb has blown. If it has, the alternator will not work. The bulb circuit is what makes the alternator start working. First thing though as Redhand says, put a meter on the battery and see if the voltage comes...

    Steering groans........

Found it on the Rave CD. Bulletin 0007 16/12/98 L8453bu Sorry, don't know how to provide a link. You'll have to look it up.

    Steering groans........

I think there is a service bulletin on this somewhere. Its some sort of vibration caused by the fluid flowing in the steering hoses. Both my Disco's have done it. assuming everything else is OK, I don't think it was considered a problem. Just annoying. Might find it on the Rave manual.

    Smashed diff!!

For gears of various sorts, they often need to be preloaded to a certain point to allow the correct amount of movement between a gear and the one it meshes with. If you get it wrong, the gears can wear very fast. If you have a look at the RAVE manual, it explains it. Usually you need dial gauges...

    Hub bearings ???

Wheel bearings don't tend to make horrible noises and then get better. Make sure nothing got caught between the brake disc and the brake shield(or in the drum if thats what you've got). I have also found that you sometimes can't feel the slack in a bearing with the half shaft still connected. If...

    Smashed diff!!

You're half way there. All you got to do is undo the ring of bots and pull the diff off. Don't let it fall on your head. Its bloody heavy and it hurts. Take it from me. As to what happened. there isn't too much to a diff. Once you've got it off should be obvious, a chipped tooth on one of the...

    Adding two-stroke to diesel

Never tried it but don't see at 200:1 it can do any harm. Haven't come across any problems with worn out injection systems either. Bear in mind that the most likely item to wear is the injection pump which you haven't got. The injectors should be OK. After all, petrol engine injectors manage and...

    Wheel Bearings

Thats the point. With everything connected, there doesn't appear to be any movement in any direction. Once you get the half shafts out and the brakes backed off then any slack will show up. But even then, a noisy bearing might not show any slack until its worn more.

    Wheel Bearings

Over many years of car ownership of various sorts, the problem of knackered wheel bearings raises its head from time to time. You hear the whirring noise, you know what it is but you don't know which wheel it is. You know if you turn the steering wheel one way, it gets quieter. I have never...
