1992 200tdi Discovery, improving daily driver turned into rebuilding rear end.

Ah that’s good to know, I’ll check that area out. Probably best investing in good spot weld drill bit. All the ones I’ve used before had a tendency to snap; is there a trick to stop this?

1992 200tdi Discovery, improving daily driver turned into rebuilding rear end.

Not touched this for a while, apart from moving it around front garden! Anyway got in Sunday afternoon to attack the seat belt mounting bolts which had stuck when I started it last year. A set of bolt removers and a session with drill bits had them out. Then I started prodding around the boot...

1992 200tdi Discovery, improving daily driver turned into rebuilding rear end.

Zombie thread update! I’d been happily using the old thing for the last few months knowing it’d need work before the MOT, which lapsed in April. Got distracted by fixing up my classic Mini which has been off the road for 5 years and needed serious work, this is now finished (as much as they...

Disco 1 Discovery 1/2 rear door aperture corners?

It’s the bodywork corners under the rear door, where the pillars meet the crossmember. Will check link out, thanks.

Disco 1 Discovery 1/2 rear door aperture corners?

My Disco 1 has quite holy corners under the rear door, causing the rear door to be a pain to shut. A nearby scrapyard has a Disco 2 in stock, so I’m planning on taking an angle finder and cutting as much as I can out the corners of that to use on mine. Does anyone know if the shape is roughly...

Great to hear you’ve got it tested!

Not much of an update but played a gig with my folk rock band at Moira Furnace in Leicestershire. Pulled the Disco up to the blast furnace to unload, and accidentally re-created a 1990s Land Rover promo shot (especially if you ignore the gazebo)!

1992 200tdi Discovery, improving daily driver turned into rebuilding rear end.

Thanks for reply. Sorted it now- there was an instruction sheet in the box…! Have used the chunky cable to go straight to the battery and left off the brown positive cable on the alternator. Other 2 cables are warning light and tachometer- both connected fine and all good and working. Voltage at...

1992 200tdi Discovery, improving daily driver turned into rebuilding rear end.

Got a different updated alternator- the 100A one from Britpart. This comes with a big red chunky cable. Haynes manual says the brown wire from alternator goes to battery so guessing this goes to the battery replacing the brown one?

1992 200tdi Discovery, improving daily driver turned into rebuilding rear end.

Right, well that didn’t really go as planned. Got original alternator off, very easy… Certainly much easier than doing the one on the everyday Suzuki which I did a few months ago! Then I discovered the shiny new 65amp alternator I’d just picked up from Paddocks is the wrong type- designed to...

1992 200tdi Discovery, improving daily driver turned into rebuilding rear end.

Just done 2 nights camping in Derbyshire in Disco, was lovely. Unfortunately on the way back the rev counter died and the warning light was flickering faintly. Past experience let me to think this is alternator failure, and a reading of 12.2v at the battery with the engine running confirmed...

1992 200tdi Discovery, improving daily driver turned into rebuilding rear end.

Minor update, central locking on all doors now works having found replacement motors from a breaker on FaceAche. Doesn’t really warrant a picture but it’s good to know. Also performed faultlessly on a 270 mile round trip to Thorpe Park and back today! Sat happily at 65mph on the M1 steady as...

1992 200tdi Discovery, improving daily driver turned into rebuilding rear end.

A few minor things, fixed (sort of) the passenger window which had fallen off runner. As the runner was rusty and all the replacement windows I saw seemed to have different design of runner, I took the advice of user DippyPud...

Disco 1 Front passenger window regulator

Very late updates on this- it had dropped out of the channel so got it stuck up and disconnected window so it didn’t drop out. Finally got round to looking at it today- channel was rotten, but have tried the No More Nails trick as they look pretty unobtainable. Plenty of 300tdi windows on eBay...

Wohoo! Another 12months ticket! Thanks Car & Commercial…! Feels way better with all the new steering stuff too, wound it up to 65mph and felt very steady. Now on the lookout for passenger door glass. Great stuff!

Cool, thanks for response. Everything went back together OK today, new damper fitted and system bled. MOT booked tomorrow morning… The problem with everything going back together easy is that it doesn’t make for very interesting reading haha!

Problem is the window makes a horrible crunching noise when going up and down! Motor is fine but I think the metal runner under the window is rusted out.

1992 200tdi Discovery, improving daily driver turned into rebuilding rear end.

Right, time to get ready for MOT which has expired! First off was the solenoid- an assortment of spanners meant it was fairly easy to get out. Annoyingly the replacement which I bought ages ago was completely different to the one I got out. As many had said, it was a few little shards of...

1992 200tdi Discovery, improving daily driver turned into rebuilding rear end.

Just realised it’s quite a while since I’ve posted anything. MOT time is coming up, and I’ve noticed the steering box has a lot of play in the centre position, and is oozing fluid a bit too. I got it reconditioned in July 2020, and it came with a 2 year warranty so I’m going to send it back for...
