Need help and some words of wisdom 90 MOT Fail

I appreciate that they may have gone up in price but a year ago I bought a new galvanised chassis for my 90 300 TDi from Marslands in Derbyshire for £1040 - a local N.Devon haulier picked it up for me and delivered it for a £100.

300 TDI - sealing the sump

Just put myself on a steep learning curve before removing my sump to clean it up and refit with new gasket compound - I don't think I need any help with this but some suggestions to alternatives to RTV Silicon Sealant would be appreciated. I'm thinking that this may be difficult to find down...

    Tensioner bearing 300tdi

About nine months ago I replaced the bearing on my 300 TDi tensioner because it squeaked - noise reappeared in about a week. I then bought a complete tensioner assembly with a new bearing fitted - this also started squeaking after a short while, so having scanned the net for a solution I found...

No need to reply - glass removed and refitted.

1996 Defender 300TDi CSW sun roof glass removal

I don't normally ask about basic stuff like this but I'm conscious from advice I've been given that some of the parts are a bit delicate so I would ask kindly if someone could advise on how to remove the glass panel. I believe there are different versions of sunroof - all I can say is that...

    Sump plug problem

If you do decide to run a tap through the sump drain hole I think it would be advisable to remove the sump to do this. This is the last place you want swarf whether it's steel, aluminium, brass or whatever.

    Tyres fouling radius arms

I would suggest that you get someone to carefully turn the steering wheel for you whilst you do the lock stop bolt adjustments - it's quite easy to go mad thinking that you need to move the bolts in or out a long way. You can get to a position where you have placed the bolt in an incorrect...

Steering lock stop bolts - getting fed up now!

Well it's as I suspected, there are two types of stop bolts (set screws) used on Defenders - I'm not too sure what makes one type suitable and the other not but last night I accidently bumped in to another Land Rover Forum where this was being (or had been) discussed. The enquirer stated that...

Steering lock stop bolts - getting fed up now!

Sorry to keep going on about these bolts but something is wrong somewhere. I bought two new one's from JSG4x4 - described as M12 x 50mm and on arrival this is correct - BUT. These bolts (yes I know they are really set screws) have to be screwed through a thick lug positioned on the swivel...

1996 300 TDi Steering Lock Stop Bolts

The mud shields were discarded a long time ago - as the purchased bolts were too short I made my own today. Now fitted and operational.

    Another JGS4X4 dissatisfied customer

Bit of a coincidence because I've just this minute finished sending an email to this company - nothing to do with your drive flange but to do with steering lock stop bolts which in reality are about 5-8mm too short to be of any practical use. In the end I made my own and I await their response.

1996 300 TDi Steering Lock Stop Bolts

Yes I should have called it a set screw but you seem to have answered my question. The set screws I have bought are 50 mm u/h and yours at 55 mm would appear to be the length I need. With the 50 mm length, there is little or no thread to attach the thin nut at the brake disc end. At the...

1996 300 TDi Steering Lock Stop Bolts

A long shot I know but it would really help me if someone has a spare bolt hanging around and would be prepared to measure the overall length and the length of the shank from the underside of the bolt. I needed to replace one of these bolts and had to destruct it to remove it - I've bought a...

Advice needed please - Steering Lock Stop Bolts

Thanks for the information. I can now see that the metal strip which I referred to is actually what was left behind when the mud shields were removed by a garage who did some work for me. Obviously they must have cut through a flange which is part of the shield and what I am seeing is what was...

Advice needed please - Steering Lock Stop Bolts

Hands up - I've been a bit of a dummy and sheared the head off the passenger side bolt which is attached to the swivel housing - this of course limits the amount of lock on one side. As would be expected when things go wrong, it has sheared flush with the entry hole so that creates a couple of...

    300tdi anti freeze and flush

Absolutely certain that the thermostat should be rated at 88 degrees C - I've recently changed mine and it made the world of difference and to be honest this was a cheap one off the internet.

Strange clicking noise while rolling along

I think this is a good starting point. I recently replaced the front off side wheel bearings on my Defender and whilst they did not display the noise you describe (excessive side to side disc movement), I can quite easily see how they would. The outer bearing was almost non existant with the...

Managed to keep control when under pressure

It just shows how the simple things work sometimes when your Landy decides to play up at the most inconvenient time. On Friday I arranged to help my Brother in Law move about 5 tons of rubble from his garden (long term major building project) to a site where someone actually wants to make use...

    Exmoor Trim Nylon Seat Covers

I'm thinking of treating to myself to a set of seat covers for my 300 TDi County Station Wagon - this will be for three fronts and four rear inward facing seats. I nearly pressed the button for a set off the *bay which are reasonably priced but of course I have concerns about the quality of...
