It's a way of heating the coolant to get the engine up to temp quicker thats all, it does not "improve" the heating in the car as such, just the time it takes to "get there"

If you dont know how long the current oil has been in there, get it changed anyway, even if you do that, my guess is your sensor is "duff" as its common to fail and give spurious early warnings like your having, oh and there is already a gearbox oil cooler on your car.
