Good afternoon all, Without removing the thermostat, is it possible to change the o ring on the metal pipe going into it. I have a leak in this area, so think the o ring has perished. Any advice welcome thanks.

I also replaced the whole mechanism, and as lyndbo said it's not that bad a job to do. If you do a search there's a guide with pictures on here. Good luck.

    Freelander 1 Full lock lurches

Knocking from the rear when the prop is attached could be a diff mount. Normally the front mount.

    Freelander 1 Annoying clunck!!!

Quick update, The rear VCU bearing rubber was on the way out too, so Bell sent me two replacements. I'm in mondo mode at the mo until I can change the bearings. Many thanks for all the advice.

    Freelander 1 Annoying clunck!!!

I followed Alibro and Nodge68's advice and gave Bell a call. I explained it all to Ken, and he is sending me a new bearing. I took the props off yesterday, but it's been pouring down with rain, so they are still underneath the vehicle. If it brightens up later I'll have another go at it.

    VCU Torque test results

No offroading, and a full set of tyres fitted before I had VCU changed. I read in a post on this thread that 30 to 40 seconds is good, so I'll do the test again in a few months time, to play safe.

    Freelander 1 Annoying clunck!!!

Bell gave a 12 month guarantee on the VCU so it's up now, I expect they would put the bearing down to wear and tear, so i'll just get new one's and have a go myself.

    Freelander 1 Annoying clunck!!!

That could be the reason why it's the front one that's gone and the rear one is o.k. I'll change them both and follow Hippo's guide on removal and fitting.

    Freelander 1 Annoying clunck!!!

The bearings were fitted at the same time as the VCU, at the end of January 2015, and i've only done 4144 miles since. I thought they would have lasted longer than they have, but as Alibro as said they could have been cheapo ebay ones, who's to know. I'm a bit doubtful of the front diff mount...

    VCU Torque test results

I did the one wheel up test today, VCU fitted by Bell Engineering at the end of January 2015, Hippo has done 4144 miles since fitting. From 45 deg to horizontal with 1.2 metre bar and 5kg weight took 35 seconds.

    Freelander 1 Annoying clunck!!!

I did the one wheel up test today. 1.2 metre bar and 5kg weight took 35 seconds from 45 degrees to horizontal. I think this is o.k. I also found that the front stud, on the front diff mount was loose, so I tightened it up. There was no lateral movement of the pinion on the IRD, so I think i'll...

    Freelander 1 Annoying clunck!!!

I managed to have a look underneath today. I pushed the rear prop with my foot, and the centre diff mount was okay. I found that the rubber around the front vcu bearing had collapsed, and there was a bit of play there. I could also turn the props about a 1/4 of an inch back and forth by hand...
