Genuine anti roll bar links seem to have fixed the problem. I can't believe inferior parts caused me so much grief.

I replaced the drop links before the loud clunk. The ball joint has been separated. I will try some genuine drop links and see if they last any better. Thanks for your help.

I wouldn't know which the ace warning light was. I'll take a look tomorrow to see if it comes on. I meant there is no warning light on once started and under way. It looks like it is locking solid but in the wrong position. Surely it shouldn't be against the boot floor?
