I had this problem. If you can get around this by starting the software with the connector to the car unplugged. It will complain that the interface cannot be found, but will not exit the program. You can then connect the box to the car and it works.

The tensioner on my TD4 is loose - making a right racket. What size spanner will fit it? So I can try to tighten up - hoping nothing more sinister wrong with it.

One (or two) of the solenoids have gone in your gearbox.
