No roughness on the half shaft I did not align it, as i didn't touch the collar, someone said if i didn't move the collar i wouldn't need to adjust aligmnent.. but i guess its off due to the leak. I also think my collet is pretty much stuck where it sits, unsure if i can even move it... I...

The Little Discovery That Could (financially ruin me)

A productive day with the Disco today, I'm pleased. Had the front end apart to replace the noisy diff with the buggered pinion bearings and leaking seal. It almost went off without a hitch, she didn't fight me, nothing broke or stripped and for once I have less expensive problems than I started...

    Pinion seal and flange

No that's not correct, there is a torque setting .... Step 1 is drain the oil from the diff. Undo the plug half way up the back. Put a bowl under the diff and undo the bottom drain plug. When all the oil has stopped dribbling out, refit the drain plug in the bottom. No seal required as its a...

    diff swap advice

Yes diff gasket and output seal and two half shaft flange gaskets, if you take the flanges off the half shafts you will need 2x fibre seals but if just removing halfshafts with the flanges you won't need them :)

Even i know SOMETHINGS no right here

The axle seal on a Disco isn't a big problem. I changed the boots on mine for the MOT last year, there was no appreciable wear in the swivel ball joints so, although I had bought the tooling and the new joints, I left them well alone. Stripping down to the ball joints isn't difficult and the...

    An oily subject..

Thanks... I will now be able to sleep tonight, listening to the steady drip, drip, drip from a half shaft oil seal.

P38A Advice for a new owner?

So just today I've noticed that steering hard in an indoors parking lot (uphill but not downhill which is weird) the tyres start screeching intermitently, a little bit. Could this be the viscous coupling in the transfer case? I thought these units a reliable generally speaking? An oil change jn...

P38A Advice for a new owner?

Be afraid, be very afraid ... Depends a bit on what the previous owner has done. You could throw hundreds at it and still pay out thousands over the first year ... or just hundreds. I'd wait and see what surprises are in store if I were you before throwing money at it. A 24 year old car is...

Disco 2 Front wheel hub won’t come off

Grrrrrr surely there is a technical/methodical way to refit the half shaft?! i damaged the seal taking it out to do the hub, stripped it all down easy peazy, removed old seal, pushed in new one no problem. And here we go again... the half shaft just will not mesh with the diff! Must of been...

    Rear hub recommendations

Today I had the vehicle up on stands to replace the exhaust system, so thought I might as well pull the half shaft and have a look at the axle O ring seal following blowing out the axle breather and clearing the hole into the rear axle casting. The oil seal was somewhat shredded which would have...

Freelander 1 Converting from wasted spark to distributor (or Visa Versa)

I am putting this here in the event that either anyone here needs this or I do in the future after my most recent engine replacement as most engines available now are the wasted spark model (Coil Packs) instead of the older distributor model some key differences and I could NOT find a guide on...

Series 3 SWB Nut and Bolt rebuild

Considering I have spent all day in the garage I haven't got much to update, progress has been rather slow but rewarding. Both swivel hubs have been re built and preload tension set to around 6.5kg (14lb ish) without the large oil seal, the UJ's have been changed in both half shafts and I...

    Transfer box woes

Yeah that was just me being an idiot. All is well although stripping the hub down wasn't a waste of time as it badly needs a rebuild. CV joint is still good but the swivel ball, seal, swivel pins and bearings have all seen better days. That'll be another trip to ebay then...

Other what have u done on ur disco today

Doh! I have a similar leak on mine. Right where the axle meets the hub gubbins. Is it the stub axle? I learn as I go and its time to learn about this. My fresh clean oil is slowly dripping away.

    Drive Flange

Thanks Tot, I have the axle stripped down as far as the diff at the moment, I have to replace the pinion oil seal 'cause the oil poured out there. The half shaft is turning smoothly in the diff, no 'hard' spots or strange noises. I'll obviously be changing oil when rebuilt and I'd imagine that...
