Testing and changing the glow plugs on a TD5

Thanks. I'd also read that TD5s are good at starting cold but I'd also read other people saying that's not true. I ended up check all my plugs and they weren't as hard to remove as I thought they'd be. I went through them all and found I only had one working properly so I'll try it again when I...

Testing and changing the glow plugs on a TD5

So for the past four years or so my Defender hasn't had to start in anything less than around 15c. Now it's back in the UK and when I went to start it in about 8c it took noticeably longer to get going and it was all a bit rocky until it warmed up. I have a couple of brand new glow plugs so I...

Rear spring stuck in upper seat

I have a bit of clearance at the bottom but only a few cm, and I’ve thought about cutting it off but if the worst comes to the worst I’d probably like to be able to take it to a mechanic. I guess I could hack away at the spring until there’s a lot less of it and hopefully it’ll be weak enough...

Rear spring stuck in upper seat

110 TD5. I wouldn’t be surprised to find it’s got some random spring on it, it’s had a few farmyard fixes. Just had another look at it. It doesn’t look like the seat is damaged but the spring does look like a tight fit. Maybe it is an oversized spring. But how should I get it out? I need...

Rear spring stuck in upper seat

Thanks for the replies. Here’s a link that I hope works: https://share.icloud.com/photos/010ydLpn9EZGX7KXbdw88axyw The axle is dropped low enough, there’s about 4cm at the bottom clear. I actually forgot to remove the retainer at the bottom until after I’d dropped the axle and got the spring...

Rear spring stuck in upper seat

I don't know if it's called a seat but the thing rear spring goes into at the top. I went to change my rear springs today thinking I could easily do both and find time to fix the front windscreen washer. I didn't even manage to get one spring replaced because when I went to remove it after...

    Spongy(?) Steering

I've been noticing lately that I have quite a bit of steering play in my TD5. I popped the bonnet and twisted the steering column and found that I can turn the column by hand a few degrees either way, but when I let go it bounces back to straight. The drop arm is turning when I do this but not a...

Rhythmic hum sound, wheel bearing roller?

I’m half way through a road trip and I’m starting to get a sort of rhythmic humming sound coming from the TD5. Before when I’ve had a wheel bearing go it’s always been a sort of constant noise but this one goes on and off. Could it be a single roller in the wheel bearing that’s failing? What are...

TD5 temp slightly lower than it should be

A battery brain is a device on the positive terminal of the battery, it cuts the power if it gets too low to start. It makes sure you’re not stranded if you leave a light on or something. Since it sits in the path of the positive I’m wondering if the connection isn’t quite right enough or...

TD5 temp slightly lower than it should be

I did yes. It was quite low so I topped it up but nothing changed. One other thing I noticed as well, I have a battery voltmeter and it’s normally read 14v but after installing the Battery Brain it dropped to around 12v. Not sure how it’s doing that, maybe I’ll double-check all the connections.

TD5 temp slightly lower than it should be

So does that mean it’s good? I’m not sure where my electrical issue could be. When I had a dodgy earth to my ECU the needle would move all the time but now it’s solid.

TD5 temp slightly lower than it should be

I know this isn’t exactly a terrible problem but I did an 8 hour round trip last weekend in my TD5 and noticed afterwards that the engine temp was reading a bit lower than it normally does. I didn’t totally think too much of it but today I was driving for a while and, this may be in my head, but...

    Creative air con installation

I don’t really like the look of the AC grilles, but that doesn’t really matter because I can’t get them out here. Second hand parts are hard to come by as well, especially bodywork. I couldn’t find cutting oil at the local shop, not even WD40 at the moment. All they had was GT7, which I think...

    Creative air con installation

So I'm trying to install a cheapo Chinese universal a/c kit into my TD5. I bought the a/c condenser frame from YRM and I'm going to forego installing the fan as it shouldn't be sitting in traffic too much and I was hoping I could get away with having to get one of those larger radiator grille...

Adapting rear Puma seats for second row TD5

I want them in the second row, so I need the seatbelts. I want to fit them to the tumble seats frame.

Adapting rear Puma seats for second row TD5

My wife thought she was picking up a bargain second row seat but it was actually a rear foldaway for a CSW Puma. Has anyone got experience adapting these? They look like they might be okay one way or another but I don’t want to tear them to bits and make them worthless just to find out they...

    Improving the doors

I've got an early type TD5 and the agricultural charm has worn off over the past 6 years and I'm kind of trying to make it just feel like a nicer vehicle. One thing I can't figure out is how crappy the doors are. Somehow they feel and sound worse than vehicles produced in the 70s. When I close...

    Defender TD5 2003 idle problems!

You can test the MAF sensor by unplugging it. After starting it should run funny for a few seconds before the ECU realises it isn't there and should then run okay.

    sound deadening quantity

My kit had 1.1 square metres in it and I had some left over after doing the roof and the bulkhead. I would have used more but I had carpet down. You don't need as much of it as you see people using on YouTube. You don't use it to create some kind of soundproof barrier, you use it to stop flat...

    Defender 90 fog switch WTF

So it’s a faulty switch then? Weird way of doing it considering pretty much every other switch is a toggle. I don’t normally need the fog lamp usually but when I need it I really need it.
