or other thing ive just thought of, are the calipers securely mounted as there could be bit of movement in them if a bolt hole has become elongated. Or are we going completely the wrong way and should be looking at the master cylinder for a possible sticking piston in the bore?

if your td is running fine, just have the clutch fitted and run it until it needs to be changed, yes there is a noticable differance between the td and tdi but the extra cost would take a long time to recoup. your old td engine is not worth a great deal as you can pick them up for £100 on ebay...
