Yup, similar problem with mine, a real slug at low revs, setting the valve clearances and blanking EGR made quite a difference ;)

Setting up my valve clearances properly and blanking the EGR valve did wonders for mine, along with new filters etc. My 300tdi was a dog at low revs, better now though ;)

I just used Kalimex K Seal on my 300tdi after doing head but still having a problem with smoking, it does what it says on the tin, awesome stuff and worth a go for £6 or so ;)

I'm sure Hedgehog is dead right, but I've found if you unscrew the expansion tank cap a bit it pressurises the system and water (and bubbles!) will flow from the bleed caps. When it's running clear tighten the expansion cap and then the bleed nuts. I do the thermostat / top one 1st then the one...

Similar problem on my 300tdi Jim, which turned out to be the matrix. It was in the summer so made identification potentially easier. Helluva job as the whole dash had to come out, but if you're not losing coolant (I was) it could just be ingress of water. Good luck, Russ

Thanks chaps, I'm hoping it's just residual water but am not discounting a more serious problem. I put about 70 miles on her today, with a view to getting her properly warm etc, and despite filling water and bleeding etc she still took a few litres of topping up. I suspect water wasn't reaching...

Fingers crossed it looks like the jobs a good un, oil & filter done and considerably less smoke. Evidence of water contamination in the oil, and I’m guessing there could be residual water that will clear through with use, unless it’s normal to smoke a bit more with EGR blanked...

Thinking about it, the oil may only start burning when warmed after it thins out etc, anyhow no brainer, I’ll change the oil :)

I had the local Land Rover specialist and the engineering place give the head a once over (before skimming), but due to carbon deposits it was impossible to check thoroughly etc. The head could be cracked but if it’s not smoking from cold, where the thermostat keeps the water in the head...

Hi folks, Just done the head gasket on our 94 300TDI 120K miles, proper job this time, had a skim, full head set, lapped the valves etc. Also bypassed the EGR, left wiring disconnected but did blank off the vacuum pipe as recommended. She starts fine, runs ok and does not smoke from cold...

Thanks Dave, I'll give that a go for now, I'm the doing head gasket so prefer to cut out too many variables in case she won't start ;)
