    Diesel Do's L Series

Oh my god, they look so much bigger!! Whats the actual diameter difference over standard for those beasts? Front looks very smart! Black shoe polish day for you today then? :D

Freelander 1 Head gasket vs inlet manifold gasket

So its not the fuel pump, tried a known working fuel pump in there too. Same noise and same lack of power. Blockage in the fuel line, blocked injector?

Freelander 1 Head gasket vs inlet manifold gasket

Yeah Yeah it belonged to diesel on here. Took his bumpers off and was going to scrap it so i bought it off him. So i've swapped over his cambelt out of curiosity. Turns out one of the cam pulley bolts had cracked, might have been why it was so stiff to turn. Put a bolt on from the donor...

Freelander 1 Head gasket vs inlet manifold gasket

Yeah i've just been looking at clutch slipping on google and i remember the revs didnt fly up when the loss of power kicked in, both needles seemed to move together... just very very slowly. I also stalled the car a couple of times using the clutch to test the handbrake cable the day before the...

Freelander 1 Head gasket vs inlet manifold gasket

So my donor vehicle got dropped off on sunday! :D Had to wait until the rain stopped before i even looked at it today but here it is... Got a couple of other bits that are in a tidier condition than mine so going to swap those over as well. Finally got the dry weather today to spend a...

looking for a lift kit can anyone help??

Anyone know of the grade of steel used and the thickness of the metal used to make these? Can't find any going cheaply (under £90) so was looking at just buying the metal sheets and fabricating them myself in the shed with a welder and a grinder. Local metal place quoted £15 for 8 pieces of...

Freelander 1 Head gasket vs inlet manifold gasket

Yeah i didnt remove the battery connections when i did the main head gasket, in fact i never bother disconnecting the battery when i do jobs. Probably should, but just one of those things!

Freelander 1 Head gasket vs inlet manifold gasket

Yup, hence me going to get the torch so i could see the belts/tensioners were in the right place. Got the torch from the back of the car, saw the new fuel filter there and thought "while my hands are mucky i'll just whip that out".... 30 minutes later i plugged my fuel hose back into the fuel...

Freelander 1 Head gasket vs inlet manifold gasket

Well theres a member on here only a couple of miles away who has an old 1.8 with working engine that is off to the scrappy at the weekend. Wants £100 for the old engine so by the time i've bought gaskets and belts, valves+tool and cambelt tensioner for mine i'll have spent that amount anyway...

Freelander 1 Head gasket vs inlet manifold gasket

With the locking tool in place, my inlet valves on cylinder 3 and exhaust valves on cylinder 4 are extended :( Both cams are very highly spung in a single spot when turning them by their nut, much harder to turn than they were before i put it together. I take it i can't re-use my elastomer head...

Freelander 1 Head gasket vs inlet manifold gasket

Okay so i managed to hammer the locking tool out from between the cams. I tried turning the engine over by hand a few times and the stiff spots it had before... well it has an insanely stiff spot now when turning it round. Bent valves most likely? I only spun it up briefly but i guess thats...

Freelander 1 Head gasket vs inlet manifold gasket

Major problem!!! i forgot the cam locking tool was in and tried to start the engine!!! ****!!! what do i do?

Freelander 1 Head gasket vs inlet manifold gasket

Yeah i've done it that way so far. Wheel off, car raised so direct line of sight to the crank pulley and doing the timing with the aux pulley removed. I just cannot for the life of me get the cams correct. How tight should it be between the crank/exhaust cam? Are you saying the belt shouldnt...

Freelander 1 Head gasket vs inlet manifold gasket

So you're saying line up the crank shaft dots. Fit the belt to the crank shaft, move the exhaust cam round one tooth clockwise (from being aligned to inlet cam) and pull the belt over, then turn the exhaust cam back a touch anticlockwise to take up the slack between crank/exhaust cam so i can...

    Freelander 1 Centre console swap

Yeah thats what i thought, a switch is a switch. Might need rewiring but it'll either be push to open or push to close. I know swapping the entire dash wont work because the speedos are controlled differently but the centre section should be pretty simple. I've had a little further looking into...

Freelander 1 Head gasket vs inlet manifold gasket

It was the actual allen key hole on the auto tensioner, the one you use to set the tension! I had the tensioner in the right place, held the allen key in one hand and went to tighten the main bolt with my other hand and it just went bang, snapped clean through the allen key slot. Managed to...

Freelander 1 Head gasket vs inlet manifold gasket

doesnt matter anyway, tried the belt a couple more times and the allen bolt hole on the tensioner snapped. ******* brilliant.

Freelander 1 Head gasket vs inlet manifold gasket

Okay, so i've whipped the covers off to take another look. With the two dots on the crank pulley lined up with the centreline on the engine block, my two cams appear to be half a tooth out of sync with each other. Have i done something wrong?
  19. K

Freelander 1 Head gasket vs inlet manifold gasket

Yeah, i aligned it with the two dots using the crank pulley sprocket and had the inlet/exhaust lined up. i put the timing belt over the inlet/exhaust first and kept it tight right down to the crank pulley. Then wiggled it up past the water pump and tensioner. I can't see what i could have done...
