Magnetic sump plugs are definately worth having. I also have a classic mini and they have always had them. They can do no harm only good in my opinion. I wouldn't be without one myself.

it's brand new - I know that's no guarantee but It could be my soldering........?

direction of the motors works fine but as I said the heat on the passenger side is only good when the book symbol goes out or if I set it to 'HI'. If I turn it down to 28 it goes cool (on the passenger side).
