    Td5 Auto - MPG

I get 900km before the light comes on (TD5 Auto). Servicing up todate, careful right foot and as much cruise control as possible. I used to drive too fast before I got the Disco, now I arrive alive, having enjoyed a stress free journey.

TD5's - are they worth it?

Hi Louise, I bought my 2000My TD5 Auto just over a year ago after handing back my company BMW. She's now got 210,000km on the clock and I have had a few things go wrong but also a few things which I see as normal wear and tear. 1) Head gasket cuz the radiator was leaking & she overheated (poor...

    Steering problems!

On two seperate occasions my TD5 decided to let go of all her PAS fluid. 1st time the joint into the PAS pump, 2nd time the pipe on the steering box itself let go. Each time I was lucky, no signs, just let go as I pulled into the works car park. AA towed me to my independant, total bill R2600, ouch!

    TD5 Engines

Oh Dear oh dear, it seems some people just want to jump to conclusions. We were testing 6cyl BMW diesel engines in Range Rover before it was announced that BMW had bought Rover. We were also developing "Storm" and "Tempest". BMW reviewed the projects and approved Storm as viable, Tempest became...

    Disco Interior/roof upholstery.

What ever you do, don't steam clean the headlining. When I bought my Disco, the Interior was immaculate and I mean immaculate. The rear seats had never been sat on sort of thing. However, the dealer thought he would have it valeted anyway and they completely stuffed the headlining up. They...

    Rattling Rear 60/40 squabs

Hi all, 2000my TD5. It looks like my PAS fluid leak is fixed (fingers crossed) so I thought I would start to tackle a few of those niggley jobs you do when you hopefully are not spending money keeping the truck running. One of those is the free play on the 60/40 rear seat squabs. They rattle...

    TD5 tick over

I know what the sound of the compressor kicking in makes, but this sound is almost like the sound the engine makes when the anti-knock sensors are kicking in cos the idle speed has dropped too much.

    TD5 tick over

Hi all, Summers arrived here with temps up towards the 30's so my air-con is being used again. I've noticed that when idling without the heater on or in econ mode she ticks over at +/-750rpm but when the air-con is engaged she sounds a little rough as if the revs have dropped and there is an...

    Power Steering hose burst

Well, got me car back. The hose had not split as thought. Now the PAS feels tight when I turn right. It's like momentarily stiff and then frees up. Any one got any ideas?

    Power Steering hose burst

Just pulled into the works car park yesterday and there was a squealing noise from the steering. High pressure hose gave up the ghost and dumped all the power steering fluid on the floor after spraying everything under the bonnet. Towed by the AA to my local independant for repairs. Only 2 days...

    TD5 tank range?

Did my EGR soon after I bought the car. As Veggielandee says, if you cane it, she will drink the fuel. speed limit here is 120km/h on the highways, so I drive +/- 110km, soft acceleration and use cruise as much as possible, read the road in front and decelerate instead of using the brakes...

    TD5 tank range?

I get 900km before the light comes on. TD5 Auto and with diesel prices here, it cost +/- R1,000 to fill up. Glad the company pays for fuel!!!!

Thought a steam clean would be good

Had an oil leak fixed on my TD5 and thought it would be good to get her steam cleaned underneath. What cock up!! Drove her away from the wash bay and onto the main road only to find she would not go above 1000rpm and kept trying to stall. Eventually crawled across the lights and parked up on the...

    TD5 Injectors

She only runs on diesel. Have spoken to Dastek Eng'g. They say that the symptoms would be underpowered, smoking and poor consumption. I don't have any of these except a bit of smoke if I gun it from stand still. I will get either Dastek or Bosch to check them out.

    TD5 Injectors

Hi all, My TD5 auto is currently in for 200,000km service. She was running ok returning 10km/l. They tell me all 5 injectors need replacing at R4780 each. Can it be that all 5 would need replacing at once? Can they be refurbished? What would the symptoms be that the injectors are stuffed?

Taking the dashboard binnacle out of a '98 Tdi 300 Disco

If the instrument pack is the same as Disco II, be careful how you store it when removed. It must be kept upright (in car pos'n) cause the dials are damped with oil. It will leak out if placed on its back etc and then yer dials are stufed!!

    Discovery 2 Auto M & S Warning Lights

I had a similar problem when my TD5 was struggling to start. My local indy told me that the gearbox and the ECU were not communicating properly. The car defaults to limp home mode then.He thought it could be the selector switch on the G/Box worn so it didn't really know which gear it was in...

    Fuel Pressure Reg

My FPR was weeping according to my local indy. I asked him what the consequences would be if I left it for a while. He said no problem, as he was not paying for the diesel in my car. Anyway got him to replace it cause fuel here is getting bloody expensive and the missus was complaining of the...

    annoying buzz

Hi All, I've got an annoying buzz which seems to be coming from the Steering colum cowl. It starts when the ignition is in pos'n 2 waiting for the glow light to go out. Thought at first it maybe a relay in the fuse box but cannot pin point it there. It continues all the time although deafend...
