TD5 Defender service items and intervals

I have just replaced all the oils on my year 2000 Defender and wondering if there is anything else I should do as preventative maintenance. Ex European forces so I think it was reasonably looked after until about 2010 but very low mileage and standard 5,000 / 10,000 mile service items done...

    Snatch rings

Tylaska rings could be ok. American made and available on Amazon UK Interesting the low friction rings don't have a load rating. I would really like to see someone test these to destruction to see what happens and just how much force it takes.

    Snatch rings

Cant see anything other than Chinese stuff with no rating on Ebay.com. It looks as though Australia is leading the way with synthetic so most of the decent kit associated with it comes from Down Under. Hence the price.

    Snatch rings

I mean the aluminium doughnuts that can be used with synthetic rope instead of a snatch block.

    Snatch rings

Looking at the prices of snatch rings. Upwards of £65 for most with any sort of load rating on them, about £20 - £30 for FleaBay specials. I would love to see some destruction test comparing these to see how they fail. I'm not about to rush out and buy anything unbranded to do with lifting or...

    Tyre Air Compressors

Sealey probably do the best of the standard run of 12V compressors. I have one with a lighter plug that's sort of ok for occasional use. Cost about £50 They do another one with croc clips that has about twice the output for a bit more than twice as much money.

    Any opinions on Terrafirma winches?

The above stuff about cable got me thinking and I did a few fag packet calculations. 35mm cable weighs about 350g per meter. 400A through this cable gives a voltage drop of 0.5V - not much, we think. 0.5V at 400A is 200W or 200 joules per second. Specific heat capacity of copper is about .39...

    Any opinions on Terrafirma winches?

I have had a good look on the forum but can't find anything useful. I would like a winch for self recovery once in a blue moon. Not worried about how fast it works as long as it gets me unstuck. Needs to be able to unstick a fully laden 110. Deep mud / sand / ditches. Not dragging it up the...

    HAND OIL PUMP DISPENSER

I have the Sealey 3l pump. Have just used it to change oil in both axles, gearbox and transfer box on the tratter. It's a bit slow but did the job with lots less oil down my sleeves than previously. Not ideal for use on a daily basis but fine for occasional servicing of my own fleet.

    lnjector service

My limited understanding suggests the original codes will still apply. As long as the injectors go back in the cylinders they came from all should be well. The reconditioning I had done on my Volvo injectors involved ultrasonic cleaning and back flushing to get out any crud that was too big to...

Gearbox, transfer gearbox and axel oils?

Changed all transmission oils today. A few notes in case it's useful to anyone. I called Dingocroft as they are nearby and asked for oils for gearbox, transfer box and axles for Y2K TD5 Defender. They supplied: 5L of Land Rover MTF94 for gearbox. I think I used about half 3L of Ravenol 75 /...

I would just like to say

I have an old car with floor mounted headlight dipping. More than once have tried to double de-dip when driving at pace down country lane and meeting oncoming vehicle. The floor mounted screen wash had the bonus of being able to choose if the dribble went to top or bottom of screen but also...

    Led lights

For old vehicles with a dynamo the conversion to LEDs makes huge sense. Dynamo output about 20A. Headlamps 55W per side - about 9A Ignition 3A Blower 3A Side lights & instruments 3A Radio 2A And that's you lot! As soon as you use your wipers or rear screen heater you are discharging your...

    Led lights

You could hazard a guess at the resistance. Incandescent side lights are 5W each so a drain of 2W maximum through the resistor shouldn't be far off. Much more than 2W added to the power drawn by the LED and you lose the advantage of the upgrade. At 12V a power of 2W gives calculated R of 72...

    Led lights

The explanation in Bettercarlighting is complete bollocks. The sheer mass of wiring storing energy... Not saying a resistor won't work but that's a perfectly ordinary wirewound resistor being sold for about five times what it would cost on Fleabay.
