With Synergy turned off it made no difference, apart from being a bit slower. Still randomly rough however I have noticed, now I have the windows down that it sounds weird - not quite a pinking sound but not far from it, at the same time as the roughness hits. Not changed the breather filter...

It idles at around 700-800 and sometimes bounces around a bit between the two, then the worst bit is just over 2000 RPM at constant throttle. No EGR valve, was removed but I had this problem before and after!

Right, its been a couple of months and the car has had a full service inc. fuel filter. I dropped the synergy down to 1 for a while but it made no difference. So, logically it has to be an injector? But I was reading about a wiring harness issue on the TD4 engine - could this be causing this...

Me too - bit more expensive than some but seem pretty good in most circumstances and have lasted well thus far. Bit noisy on concrete motorways!

No, you have changed the two fuel pumps. Newer Freelanders have just one pump in the wheel arch but not yours.

Just make sure it isn't blue Y97 JFO as it has been clocked and had a multitude of other faults... I was lucky to get my money back...

Depends on how you use the car, if you regularly refill when at almost empty then you run the risk of the pump sucking up any dirt/crap in the bottom of the fuel tank. This is what I think killed my in tank pump on my 2002 TD4 (twin pumps). I now refill at 1/4 mark now just be extra careful...

Will do, fitting new fuel filter tomorrow too. Did the gatwick run today (120 mles or so) and seemed pretty smooth, doing a variety of speeds between 50 and 85. Will report back!

Set at 5 - I am suspecting dirt as the tank was quite low (cost £87 to fill) when I filled at sainburys. Forgot to say that when it is in lumpy mode I can hear a pinking type noise from the engine. Is it worth pulling the main pump out and giving the filter a clean? Cheers!
