Disc brakes (and an old fart...)

Disc brakes release completely when you take your foot off the pedal and move and the centrifugal force from the disc helps push the pads away the piston does also retract a tiny amount when you take your foot off. Because of these very small tolerances of movement it is imperative that...

Sit rep for a P38A restoration project

The CD changer is cheap enough off Ebay, so I would replace it. The hevac display will be had it but the hevac units seem to be quite expensive so I think I would leave it unless you try the method I have seen on the internet about applying pressure to the dead pixels for 10 to 15 seconds...

new battery required for p38 v8

Definitely fit the largest capacity battery you can. I have a 1000 cold crank Excide plant battery on my P38 and it never has any electrical gremlins. P38's are very sensitive to low batteries so don't cut corners.

    Lower Tailgate

What bodyshop is that it sounds cheap. I only live round the corner from you in Cornerhouse cottages. Blue Rangie with GUN number plate. I need a few bit of bodywork tiding up.

Will P38's become appreciating Assets ?

My Rangie is called incontinenta after a woman in a carry on Cleo, the reason being the auto trans cooler has a weep and leaves a little red reminder on the floor wherever the cars been.

Replace head gaskets or new engine?

My P38 1999 4.0 GEMS 146000 miles has started to lose water so I have been topping it up with no obvious sign of a leak, anyway the last 3 days when you go to start in the morning or after 4/5 hours standing the engine will not turn, its hydraulicing as its OK after 2 or 3 attempts, but when it...

    Serpentine Belt

No one has stated the obvious. I would first check that there is no contamination on any of the surfaces the belt passes over, it only takes a spot of oil or antifreeze water to make a belt slip, also the tensioner might seem ok but is the bearing in the pulley ok?

    P38 Emergency Help needed

It will be the belt loose the reason its slowing when you turn the steering is because its slipping that is what the burning rubber smell is, it cant be over tight as they have an auto tensioner so it automatically keeps the belt to the correct tension, it cant do this if the belt has lost its...

    Vibration

Unable to check car as I went to the workshop and while I have been away for the week both ramps have become home to dead vans in bits. So it will be during the week I will get a better look.

    Vibration

Sorry did not see the second part of your reply. The discs were changed a few months earlier and I done them in the garage where I work the mating faces were cleaned spotless with an air powered wire brush.

    Vibration

Yes it has 18" sport wheels and it has the the proper Land rover wheel nuts and the better alloy spigot rings which were all in place (as Im paranoid about them) so I dont think that is the problem. Thanks for your reply Aero.

    Vibration

My Rangie has been a little naughty of late, 40 miles into a holiday trip to Felixstowe the N/S rear and O/S front brake calipers decided they wanted to work permenantly, so I pulled over and let the brakes cool and continued on the rest of the journey without incident, when we got there I...

    LRO Show at Billing.

I went yesterday and thought it was a good day out, not much for Rangies but didnt really need anything anyway. First time on an offroad course and the p38 went round faultless didnt even break into a sweat and I did not miss out the deep wading or the mud pit. I am truly amazed at what these...

    Locking wheel nut key

I Will just add my two peneth, when you get them off throw them in the bin and just replace them with 4 normal wheel nuts, really not worth the bother as anyone who really wants them will have the kit to get them off in seconds, all the cars I have had have been pretty high end and I have took...

Other jobs while it is in bits ... intercooler, aircon

Any Diesel intercooler on a car with a few miles on it will have a sweat around the pipes. I would not worry about it, if your turbo was shot and burning oil you will know about it.

    DSE viscous fan nut size?

I always undo viscous fans with a cold chisel and a sharp crack, never ever had any issues with water pump damage(Done hundreds I look after a fleet of around 100 Transits and you had to take the fan off to do the timing belt on the old shape trannys). I personally would not use a blow torch as...

Anyone see the RRC on TV last night?

Proper old money car, I think the p38 is also very much old money but I think it will be the last, new Rangies just seem to be gangsters and footballers.
