Mostly around town and some dual carriageway driving I'm getting 34 mpg. Towing (50% motorway) I still got 26mpg. Not bad I think for an 11 year old 3 door. I'm expecting more on a long motorway run without the caravan........will report back.

2nd problem is easily sorted.....move house! :) 1st problem....most likely the cable is broken.

I don't get this.....why should the wires disconnected cause the amber HDC light to come on? If connected properly no circuit is made until the switch on the gearstick is activated. That would be normal at start up surely. A disconnected switch is no different to not pressing the switch?

Where exactly is this warning lamp? I haven't seen it. 1999 Freelander. Then again, I don't let it run that low. As soon as the gauge is below quarter full I diesel up just in-case the gauge ain't right.

Thanks chromiumuk.....that's just how it feels...handbrake partly on. I get the same feeling of brakes partially applied on full lock going forwards, such as when entering a tight parking bay. Is this normal?
