    Disco buying advice

To check the rear seatbelt mounts, fold the rear seats forward. Standing by the rear door, lift the carpet and sound damping mat and have a look. Sometimes you get trapped moisture under there and it starts rotting (happened to mine but I noticed in time and it's not too bad). I'm pretty sure...

    Dripping Diff....

The diff cover has probably rusted through. You should be able to patch it up (I did my rear diff cover about 2 years ago and it's been fine). I'd guess the stuff on the axle is probably engine oil that's leaked out over the years - it might just be what's been spilled when the oil filter has...

    Legal Advice

You can use the small claims court which doesn't involve a lot of money - of the order of £200 (which you get back if you win), rather than 000's. I know somebody who went down this route and got his money back, but it can take a while. Dealers with good sense will just take the car back...

Advice on either a Tdi or Td5

Personally I'd go for the 300tdi. I've got a 200 at the moment bought off a friend who then bought an early TD5. He's had a couple of expensive problems but the 200 is still going strong (touch wood). Of course, it could all be down to luck...

    1997 300tdi disco

I'd second that, check for rust!! Also sills, especially behind the plastic trim under the doors - see if it's bulging anywhere, press it and listen for crunching, especially below the rear doors. Also when you test drive, listen for knocking, clunking noises when taking up drive and changing...

    heavey steering in deep water

I get this too sometimes, but my battery light comes on as well. Happens even going slow through not very deep water, but sometimes I charge through a huge deep puddle and it's fine. I guess the alternator belt also slips. Been meaning to see if I can do anything about it, but with no garage...

    Sluggish Disco

I think I'll shop around for a kit this time - looks like it works out a lot cheaper! By the way, make sure either you don't need or that you've got the half moon things for the rocker cover gasket before you chuck your old one on the floor in amongst the muck, stand on it etc. I didn't do...

    Sluggish Disco

Where do you get a fuel filter for £1 ??? Can't remember exactly, but my last one was at least a fiver.

    What"s it worth

I'd say that's a pretty fair asking price, although many people would be put off by the mileage. As long as it ain't falling apart of course, but then you wouldn't have bought it only 6 months ago if it was???

    low ratio

If mine won't go into low, I find putting the transfer box in neutral, main box in 2nd or 3rd and running with the clutch up for a few seconds helps. Don't know if there's any technical reason why this would or wouldn't make any difference but it seems to help!

Alternator - I have searched previous threads

brand new "genuine part" ones are about £130, from memory.

Ah right, sorry I misunderstood your post.

Alternator - I have searched previous threads

Had my alternator die on me a couple of years ago - batterly light stays lit even after turning ignition off. I don't think this is your problem, or even if there is a problem, otherwise your battery would go flat pretty quickly. Mine (200tdi) wouldn't run with no charge in the battery with...

    are disco's that bad???????

The jap crap is a poor imitation, don't fall for it. If you just want it to go to the shops, you'll probably be ok but don't ask them to do any real work like pull stuff or go offroad. I always laugh hard when I see one with cart springs or stupid big shiny wheels, called something dumb like...

    Lt77 Gearbox Reverse Probs...help !!!

mines a bit tricky to get in reverse sometimes too. Sticking it in transfer neutral and running in 2nd gear briefly, then trying reverse again sometimes helps (this also helps if it won't go from H to L or L to H. A bit of a pain mind.

    Brake lights on 94 Disco

What disco is it? On my '94 200Tdi, I have stop and tail bulbs with 2 filaments in the main rear light clusters. It could be that the brakelight filament has gone but the tail light filament is ok, so check the bulbs. If you have lights in your bumpers, I don't know how they are set up I'm...

    bumper end caps

Yes you have to take off whole bumper, but it's only 2 bolts underneath from memory. Then the endcaps are held on with a couple of screws and a small nut. That is for a 200tdi anyway...

    when turning the wheel!

My '93 200 tdi sometimes does this groaning sound at parking speed too. Had a look and all seems in order so I ain't worried about it. Seems fairly common too.

94 300TDI Disco - Upgrading to Vented Front Discs

I don't know much about it but I read somewhere that for some markets Disco I's were fitted with vented discs because of restrictions on using asbestos in the brake pads. mko9 says they went vented from '98 but it could be that export Discos had vented brakes earlier than that meaning you...
