Front transfer box bearing is firmly stuck. I'm trying to shift it with a slide hammer attached to the shaft as per the excellent busterbus guide. The bearing has failed big time - totally dry, half the balls have dropped back out of the race and no matter how much hammering it just won't shift...

Managed to turn prop with just one wheel off (N/S). Much easier to get to the bolts apart from a support cross member that's right in the way. But it's off now and just need to get the old bearing out. Thanks for the advice.

I must be really dumb! I'm trying to get the front prop shaft off (rear end) but the nuts and bolts are in a right mess. I would have a better chance if I could rotate the shaft for better access. Will I have to get all 4 wheels off the ground to do this? Anyone??:confused:

Sorry to pick up a 6 year old thread! But it made me laugh. Last time I replaced a front prop on a Disco I got my wife to drive the car while I was underneath to check when the bolts were more accesible. I said to her 'move very slowly and I'll shout stop'. She gunned the engine and shot forward...

Just found this comment - may be some advice please. The front bearing on my 300TDI Discovery needs replacing. Haynes manual want's me to leap through hoops of fire! (whole transmission out)! Could this not be replaced in situ??? Anyone:confused:

Hi all, My Disco has started running rough and sluggish (a bit like a petrol engine with a fouled plug). Very lumpy tick over and white smoke. Slackened injector unions one by one, and each time running got rougher on each except number 2 - which displays frothing diesel. Removed very soggy...
