    Pressure cap not releasing pressure!!

I know I've read dozens of threads but noone ever seems to have identical symptoms, or indeed ever really follow through with a definitive solution! Ah well, garage it is.

    Pressure cap not releasing pressure!!

No stat, so needle generally reads about a quarter when warmed up, heaters work fine.

    Pressure cap not releasing pressure!!

Diesel yes, sorry. Convinced it's not major. The thing can run great for a few days, then whack, solid hoses. Regardless of what's causing the pressure, surely the sole purpose of the cap is to release it?

    Pressure cap not releasing pressure!!

System keeps pressurising after 20 miles. When the engine is cold you can squeeze the hoses and hear venting from the expansion tank cap, but when it's hot, hoses can be solid so why is the excess pressure not being released? Just bought a brand new cap and still doing it. Breather is clear...

    A strange wee leak.

A problem or does it just need a tweak? Any relation to overheating?

    A strange wee leak.

So, after a bit of an over heating problem, my dt finally blow the top hose. It burst near the engine end. I noticed some bubbling coming from the plug (glow plug?) just at the hose end. At first wasn't sure if it was oil, or just water from the burst, but having fixed the hose, at temp, the...

shove a hose pipe in it.

Well this is the very bizarre thing... It's a viscous fan (2.5 dt) and has always run at the same speed with the engine idling. On this one occasion however, with the engine idling as normal, the fan was running at about twice the speed!? Turn off, turn straight back on... fan back to normal...

shove a hose pipe in it.

couldnt get the bottom two bolts undone so did a bit of a flush in-situ, which was semi successful. Did manage to fix leak from stat housing, which had previously been siliconed, no o-ring in sight ('mechanic who i PAID to replace stat, just took it out and gummed up behind him) I suspect that...

shove a hose pipe in it.

general overheating problem solving the free way. Taken out stat and bled, generally runs fine but begins to overheat especially under load. pumps fine, i know the fan isnt at its best but its bloddy freezing at the moment i can tackle that next. surely gently running water is what its used...

    What ones are the best??

I have a friend who went down the ex-police route. Massive mileage but meticulously maintained. As long as you dont mind putting right a few little cosmetic issues...

shove a hose pipe in it.

Can i flush my radiator by just whipping it out and shoving a hose pipe and/or pressure washer in it?

    weird wipers

came out to the car this morning to find the wipers running!! Car was not locked, but the key was in my hand. To be fair, it was raining! Ran the bloody battery down in the process. I did notice a bit of a clicking sound whilst under the bonnet the other day trying to deal with a far more...

PROBABLY the most annoying problem in the world...

A wee update... took down the road, 4 miles, to workshop. Temp was reaching the red on arrival. I'm assuming you'd have to take the fan out to change the stat, in which case it does'nt look like mines been disturbed, possibly just siliconed round in an attempt to hide the slight leak. What i did...

PROBABLY the most annoying problem in the world...

Im no expert (obviously) but given that i can drive 30 miles without incident (albeit with the needle reading at about a quarter) i cant help feeling this is an intermittent thing. How long would it take for new coolant to be, well, sniffable? Got in it this morning and within three miles the...

PROBABLY the most annoying problem in the world...

Thanks for all the advice... I think my next plan has to be strip out and test stat, check pump, take out and check radiator etc etc bleed, and cross everything!! There are a couple of shiny new bits below the tensioner (possibly pump?) but no harm in checking the whole lot. Anyway the wife...

PROBABLY the most annoying problem in the world...

is it best to approach radiator from the front with the grill off?? I figured the pump was ok - gave it a good rev with the cap off and water rushed out. Also I'm sure ive seen a bit of paper showing a new one within the last couple of years. Ive been pretty careful to kill it before it gets too...

PROBABLY the most annoying problem in the world...

I'm really hoping it a dodgy stat. Will test at the weekend. No nasty smell in the header, clean oil and coolant. I did have about 50 miles between today and previous incident.
