only thing i ever heard of like this is the oil pressure switch.... the oil light would come on when on tickover, usually when the engine is hot - it goes out with a few revs...

not answering questions directly, but check/clean the earth straps (battery to chassis/chassis to starter etc) Take them off and sandpaper the surfaces clean. Oh remove a glow plug, hold the body against engine, get someone to turn ignition on and watch it glow (or not)

Ive syphoned a disco tank with a hose pipe... other than mouth full of diesel, no problems. Seriously, if you can feel the hole just go get some chemical metal/body filler/something, and plug the hole, forget taking everything apart.

Just unplug battery and replace the one thats jacked right up, put battery back on and watch it lower down (if it is a sensor) There is nothing wrong with the side that is normal. Have you checked the side thats up in the air's sensor? Is it actually ok or has it physically broken?
