    wont start

This could be a complete red herring, but I had a 2001 td5, that used to conk out periodically - but then wouldn't start for a while. I eventually found that disconnecting the battery, for a minute, then reconnecting it worked. It was the immobiliser which, contrary to popular belief can...

    Fuel Additive surprise

Update The results I've had over 2 tankfuls, just under 900 miles, - 31.266 mpg. I've said before that, short of cruising at a steady 50 mph all day, the sort of mileage I do is probably the gentlest sort - not slow, but the majority of the journey is between 30 and 60, only about 15 stop...

Okay I mean Poor acceleration..From last post.

Actually, I liked the previous spelling; poor acceleration certainly does = poor exhilaration!

    which engine to choose

this one, for example: LHD Land Rover 109 diesel For Sale (1983) on Car And Classic UK

    which engine to choose

I see quite a few LHD LRs (and some Santanas) in Spain and France. Are these expensive? - might be an easier option

    best engine for 90????

Hang on - you're getting 25mpg? I only get 27 from a td5 (admittedly in a 110) Seems a lot of work and expenditure for 2-3 mpg, unless you're doing humongous mileage?

td5 injector washers had to slip on,and afer words major amont of oil geting in sump!

Diesel getting into engine oil... Can eventually lead to engine runaway, which always, always destroys engines unless you react very fast indeed

    Is My ECU Dodgy?

I had a fault with defender td5 losing power at odd times, then stalling, refusing to start for 10-20 minutes. I found disconnecting then reconnecting battery got it going (rebooting a land rover! what's the world coming to?) Turns out the immobiliser was at fault it eventually...

    Fuel Additive surprise

...and of course, relatively somnolent constrictor species that eat grossly but infrequently, store energy in the form of convertible hydrocarbons, whereas so-called venomous species, relying on speed for hunting, have proportionately smaller fat stores... blah blah, drone drone... Seriously...

    Fuel Additive surprise

Strictly speaking, the calorific value of snake oil varies with species; cold water species have significantly higher values on combustion than tropical species; however, the relationship is by no means linear, and there is statistically significant overlap between populations. In any event, as...

    Fuel Additive surprise

Rob - I'm a scientist, so you can imagine what I make of quack claims and makebelieve science! I've reasonable evidence that something is going on, and my next step is to quantify that. My initial estimates place the economy gains in excess of 10% - but I'm immensely skeptical (if it were that...

    Fuel Additive surprise

What other symptoms of compression problems might I see? (starts well, every time, doesn't smoke, idles fine...)

    Fuel Additive surprise

Well, I decided to experiment, and not put additive into the next tank full. I got about 10 miles, and in exasperation, stopped and put a 50ml treatment in again. The old lethargy at low revs was back. I had to work the box to get up to speed. After the treatment, about a couple of...

    Fuel Additive surprise

I know this crops up every now and then, but hadn't expected that, on adding the appropriate measure of millars (2003 td5 110 with 100K on) because I thought cleaning the injectors a bit might be a good idea (how do these cleaner reckon to work?) I was suprised by an instant improvement in...

    Improve road comfort defender?

I'm all for terrafirma steering dampers, though I'm not getting lots of steering wheel shake. It does have a relatively new, but procomp, damper, and I'm concerned that just uprating the damper might be concealing, rather than curing the problem, 'specially if it's swivel shims or panhard bushes.

    Improve road comfort defender?

The current spring/dampers are pretty standard; would road-biased ones actually translate to softer springs with anti-roll bars? Take the point about poly bushes, which can bang a bit. but what about this axle-bounce? I'd thought it was a problem with high unsprung weight, inadequately...

    Improve road comfort defender?

Sorry, I've searched, can't seem to find much on road comfort (perhaps unsurprisingly!). My problem: An '03 defender 110 double cab p/up, TD5, 100K on clock, almost all road use (it's not even scratched!). I've run it for the last 24K round France a couple of times, bit of Spain, used...

    Def. 110 Vibration at 80-90mph

Ok - I asked for a ribbing! :behindsofa: I should explain that I don't habitually expect that kind of speed out of a defender! - in fact I just travelled through Europe - 1275 miles- at between 59 and 68mph - usually 64. Apart from the odd burst just to see - which is when I found out. Nice...

    Def. 110 Vibration at 80-90mph

"stick to 60mph " - well, naturally, in this country I do. Tyres = good (general grabber AT2); in fact the scorpion 285 MTs on my last one were fine at those occasional high speeds, and the brand new BF goodrich ATs (same size) that were on the vehicle when it was nicked, were also fine ( I...

    Def. 110 Vibration at 80-90mph

hmmm would I be right that the only way to test the hypothesis would be to remove one prop at a time, and try it out on 2wheel drive at 80-90 (have to go abroad, of course)?
