    R380 gear oil alternative

Update done several thousand miles and no problems. On the odd cold morning second gear is abit notchy but not always otherwise all is great with lovely changes up and down and pretty quiet, for a land rover....

    Lesson learned - new owner.

Ok so went for new seals again. Genuine LR parts this time. When I stripped it I could see that the seal was leaking where it met the body of the box, possibly encouraged by a score after I removed the old seal but no visual confirmation due to a lack access. Anyway new LR seal in place along...

I rekon you are right, going to remove the old seal today and see what happend hopefully. Problem is funds are tight now, am wondering if it is possible to buy a better seal direct from land rover or a hydraulic shop. Otherwise its £50 for a used box, not to mention the lost work....It's abit of...

    Lesson learned - new owner.

Well my steering box seal lasted 1 month and has now completely sh*t itself, typical as I spent yesterday waxoiling it and today got the tracking sorted and brought 20L of 10 - 40w, new rear pads and a air filter. Had just collected the missus and my son, gotten takeaway and then all of a sudden...

    Lesson learned - new owner.

Ah the romance, today I have replaced the oil seal on the input shaft of the steering box, with the box in place and washed her. Also got the idle speed back down to normal and adjusted the slack out of the steering. Arrived home and an hour later no drips! Happy man!

Rich that's a good offer , but I have just cut them short until I extend them properly.

    Lesson learned - new owner.

The one that looks like a curly whurly is the gearbox breather and the other is the transfer box breather, I am rekoning that the breathers blocked are causing the oil to be forced out of the transfer box as it heats up, hopefully now it will only drip instead of p*** out every time I drive...

    Lesson learned - new owner.

I should really rename this progress report or something like that....Well my gift to myself just keeps giving - mostly oil stains all over the drive, one of which was the transfer box leaking, so seeing as it was raining today I decided to remove the center console and look for leaks from above...

Well I have re installed the xs seats as the es ones were like sitting on a high stool. Also cleaned out the sedimeter, tryed draining it first but hardly anything came out just a small amount of gloop. Obviously it was full of sludge like substance and now it is refitted the old disco is...

    Lesson learned - new owner.

I did a good check for rust, chassis could be passed off as being only a couple of years old, body is the best I have seen. I once welded one of these front to back the entire truck was rotton as a pear so I knew that this one was going to be worth buying. It seems discoverys have more chance...

Private sale, repair completed - just fitted a piece of clear braided fuel pipe with a pair of jubilee clips in place, less than 20 mins and cost nothing as had the bits sitting in the workshop. Was a cash sale after seeing the advertisment on ebay, might compile a photo album of things that...

Last night decided to replace my lift pump on the newly purchased disco 1 300 tdi. Removed the high pressure pipes pipes to improve access and got the new delphi unit in place no bother. Went to start it and it ran poorly and then cut out, lots of trying to get it to run and hardly any success...

    R380 gear oil alternative

I am not recommending ignoring the recommendations of LR or saying do not use MTF 94, only trying to give people another option if MTF 94 is unavailable (as in my case) or if maybe you have tried the LR stuff etc and are unhappy then I can say I have used this valvoline oil with good success...

    R380 gear oil alternative

Yet it changes really nice and is loads quieter - maybe in the morning it will be a different story but I doubt it as it was cold oil going into the box....what weight would you suggest?

    Gearbox oil argument!

I have just put ValvolineSYNpower 75-80w GL-4 Fully synthetic under £25 for 3L. Old oil was unknown but came out honey color and very runny. Gear change was notchy as soon as it was hot, pretty bad especially getting 2nd going down. Also a good loud whine that was getting louder. Now it is very...
