could be head gasket gone feel along the back of the engine between the head and the bulkhead.. mine had gone at the very back and you could feel the hot air/oil being pushed out on compression.

tightening up the throttle cable is a well known mechanics trick to make people think a service has made a real difference as the car is percieved as being more respopnsive :-)
