    Bonnet mounted spare??????

The old Series Land Rovers used to have a special bonnet for mounting the spare, it was stronger than the standard one. The Defenders all use the same bonnet though. It isn't that strong and you'll often see Defenders with spares on the bonnet that are bent out of shape. I agree that spares on...

daft question and easy , but i do need to know..

ALL Discoveries are permanent 4WD. The little gearstick, if you move forwards & back, selects low or high ratio and if you move it to the left it locks the transfer box diff - this is why the sign illuminates on the dashboard. It is there to remind you to take the vehicle out of difflock as soon...

    What do you think?

The V8's are worrying at over 100k, it's a question of when - not if - the head gaskets go. Also there's the porous block to worry about....Nice engines when they're running well though, just juicy and they leave you anxious about the aforementioned.

Classic RR, is white to be avoided ??

I hate white cars and unless it's a Ferrari, red cars too. You're right though, on older cars it's the condition and price that are most important - I wouldn't turn down the car I wanted, in the condition I wanted and at the price I wanted just because it wasn't my favourite colour. Just...

My goodness, what a mess. I'd love to see what the driver of that little heap looks like.

New Disco / Range Rover Sport

I don't see the point of a Range Rover Sport. If you want speed and have that amount of money to spend, buy a chuffin' fast car! A normal Rangie, yes, but the Sport is a big no no in my eyes. One for the Beckhams et al, not a serious off-road tool. Why pay all that dosh for maintenance and fuel...

    If carlsberg made fiesta's

That's minging though! I mean, why bother? Should've stuck a Toyota pick-up body on that, not some chuffing Fiesta monstrosity!

    Which Oil

Land Rover recommend a 20W 50 mineral oil for your Landy mate and to change the oil every 6000 miles. Nothing to be gained from using synthetics, these old engines were designed for mineral oil and the thinner modern oils don't work as well. A good quality mineral oil such as Duckhams Q will be...

    Gearbox purchased.

Let us know how the gearbox is once you've fitted it. I might be in the market for a new box soon and would like a review of the Paddocks ones! ie does it whine, crunch or feel in any way "not quite right"

So why did you buy a Landy? (Christmas thread)

I agree with that "sitting on the floor" feeling you get in cars. My right knee is shot so getting in & out of a car is a real chore, especially when some tw*t has parked really close-up. Stabbing pains in your knee whilst trying to stop your door touching the next car and contorting your body...

    Wet parcel shelf?

Fortunately I don't have any sunroofs but my alpine windows do let in the odd drip. Use clear silicone sealant from B&Q to sort these but sunroofs need a bit more attention. Some people smear vaseline all over the seals in winter, obviously sealant would make the roofs inoperable come summer. As...

    Soft top

In my soft top 90 the inertia reels fitted on the rear bulkhead, ie behind the seats. The inertia reels were there and then they fed up to a bracket drilled into the roll bar. You can put the bracket anywhere you see fit, so long as it's sturdy. Alternatively just roll them directly over your...

    Need some info and Help

The TD5 has the TD5 engine:) Pre Feb 1994 diesel Discos have the 200 TDi and '94 to '98 have the 300TDi.

    What should I offer

Late 200TDi's in good condition can fetch up to £2500 on Ebay, more in Autotrader. It all depends on the condition and how they drive. There are so many about that buyers can afford to be picky and turn down ones with excessive corrosion, worn seats etc. Good 200's can fetch more than average...

    leak

You could buy some new seals from a Land Rover dealer, they go between all the roof panels. Alternatively just use some silicone sealant (you can get the clear stuff) from B&Q or Homebase etc. Make sure all the joints are clean and dry before applying.

    Pinion oil seals

There's only one way to do it mate, pour oil in until it drips/pours out! No dipstick unfortunately. There is a drain bolt towards the bottom for obviously letting the oil out but also a filling bolt up top for pouring the oil in. If you're just checking the level you need to remove the top bolt...

    Pinion oil seals

Yes, most Landies leak in various places. Keep an eye on the diffs and check the oil regularly, you don't want to run them dry! The seals are cheap and relatively easy to do but a mechanic will charge a fair whack if you don't do it yourself.

    Thrust bearing?

Hi all. Replaced the clutch and thrust bearing with genuine parts but now I have symptoms of a worn thrust bearing! When the clutch is engaged and the gearbox in neutral I've got that thrust bearing noise. What's up????
