Don't know about jacking the body up, I've never tried. I guess if you undid the bolts on the mounts at either end of the sills you might be able to. I was thinking more like leaving the body where it is, fastening the new metal to the mount, bolting the mount to the chassis and then...

Well, in the past I'd have wedged some wood between the chassis and the body then cut away the area around the body mount with a grinder/dremel/hammer and chisel, depending on what you can get at it with. Then I'd fabricate the new section, bolt it to the rubber mount and weld it to the body...
