    Can't engage low range

Thanks for that. I'm a bit worried that the previous owner might have gone a bit hard on the lever. Can you put me out of my misery and give me an idea of far you should be able to pull the red lever if the 4 wheel drive shaft is stuck solid? As I mentioned before, I can almost see the...

    Can't engage low range

Yep, front cover is finally off. The 4 wheel drive shaft (closest to you whilst sat in the drivers seat) is rusty as buggery. Sooooo......how do I free it up? Looks like it hasn't been going into 4 wheel drive after all, as when I push down, to lift the locking pin, I can still turn the...

    Can't engage low range

OK.......still having trouble here. I've taken the floor pan panels out for better access and although there is a lot of dirt the linkages seem free enough. I've removed a small inspection cover on the transfer case and the detent spring and 'ball'. When I move the 'red' lever back I can...

    Gearbox and transfer case levels

Thanks Oxides, but tried it already and the plug still won't budge. (The gearbox plug 'square' seems to be a bit smaller than 1/2", whereas the transfer case plug is 1/2", but now perilously close to being round). Any ideas on how I can 'dip' the boxes some other way, as I reckon I'm close...

    Gearbox and transfer case levels

Just wondering if there is an alternative to removing the filler plugs to check the levels? My plugs are stuck fast  Also can the plugs be changed from the 'square head' to either the torx type or recessed 1/2 inch drive type.......or is there a tool that I need to sell the kids for...

    Which Penrite Oils?

Not sure where you're coming from Dirtyrhino. First you say use both types then you suggest just one? Whaddya mean? As I mentioned before, the Haynes manual suggests SAE 90EP for the diffs and the gearbox, but the Penrite website gives one oil type for each. (So the manufacturer (well...

    Which Penrite Oils?

Still on a bit of a learning curve, so forgive a possible repeat offender question....... My Haynes manual calls for SAE 90EP oil for pretty much everything except engine, clutch and brakes. Sooooo........which one of the pentrite gear oils fits the bill, as I don't want o have to use 2...

    Parts Supplier Survey

As the Aussy Dollar is pretty strong against the Pound and the US dollar, I'm thinking of buying a variety of spares from the UK and/or US. As usual Google brings up a gadillion different websites, so, as I don't have a spare week to trawl through them all I'm wondering what shops people...

    Can't engage low range

Thanks again for all the help. This is my first Series Landie, so I'm a bit in the dark. Pretty sure I wasn't in first gear (tried a few times), but I'll check again. Yeah, when I push down on the yellow one, the red one moves freely.....maybe too freely? Also, the yellow doesn't feel...

    Can't engage low range

Thanks for this, I'll give it a go. Just curious as to why I can only move the red lever back when the yellow is pushed down?? Thought that it would be the other way round, as 4 wheel drive is 'automatically' engaged when low range is selected......(so I've read somewhere). Have a cool...

    Newbie

Hi Just joined and wanted to say g'day. We've got a couple of Land Rovers, a D3 TDV6 and a 1979 Series 3 diesel (which is the reason for joining this forum). Had a couple of Rangies. A 1985 with a 4.6 V8 and with all the rain forest toys, and a 1995 4.0 Ltr SE. Anyhoo, have a cool...

    Can't engage low range

Hello campers, Just bought a 1979 Series 3 diesel as a bit of a project and as a camping/fishing taxi for me and the young ones. They love, I love it, the missus thinks it's cute so everything is OK. :) Except...... the old girl will not shift into low range. I can only select low...
