but why has it just gone from being stuck in "Stick backwards" gears to 5th breaking? How much of a job is getting the rear extension off etc?

When I push it forward you can feel a wave like rumble coming back through the stick but no grinding gear just a gentle pulsing like it's just rubbing the edge of the cog

Now the goalposts have moved! I took the cover off and all looked well, nothing out of place, no grooves on the lower stick just some grease and there is a small machined hole on the driver's side of it but no loose parts apparent below in the "well" so to speak. So I had a fiddle and it felt...

Ah the brute force and ignorance method!! Good old Land Rover!!!. I'll do that Sunday but looking at the bias plate which I believe is the plate below it seems to be in one piece so where next? The resistance seems to be lower down the stick if that makes sense? I will not be beaten...

OK, I managed to drill the rivets out and take the ring and rubber shield off then found this metal box/cover. I unscrewed the two screws but I'm damned if I can gfet the box offf. The screws won't come out as they appear to be long ones with a collar fixed onto their shaft so they won't pull...

Guessed as much!! Joy! job for another day! Are the pop rivets standard or were there bolts before? Is it worth putting bolts and spring clips when I put it back or is this repair a once in a blue moon job?

Ok I've managed to get the centre console out and the gearbox has a rubber cover which appears to be held shown by a pop riveted rim as shown in pics. The centre console has been out before and I suspect the pop rivets are not original. Do I have to drill these out or is there another edge...

Ah that makes sense. I am leaning towards the glow plugs. The lift pump is ok. Is there an easy way to test.glow plugs? Thanks Jon

That's a good idea but all I can see it would do is tell me to get the push bike out straight away rather than help fix the problem!! (apart from maybe getting the mix right by experimentation)

I'm going to check the lift pump, sedenter and glow plugs this weekend. I bought the Disco as a hobby toy, didn't expect I'd have to use it as my daily runner when the family car suddenly died!! Joys!! Jon
