200TDI conversion rear crankshaft oil seal

I did a lot of research before doing this job and from what I gathered using grease or oil to help initial fitting and running is suggested by 50% of forumites. Even this board the opinions vary. My take is that an oil seal is designed to hold back the oil and it will be splashed with enough...

200TDI conversion rear crankshaft oil seal

Engine is now out and it was slightly weeping from the seal itself. Also no paper gasket was fitted but RTV used instead. It looks like this failed to stick on one side, hence the major leak from here. All cleaned up, new paper gasket came with pre-fitted RTV where required. I put some RTV...

200TDI conversion rear crankshaft oil seal

Can I please ask the opinion of those that know before I take the engine out and get stuck in. I understand that the engine to flywheel housing should have a paper gasket fitted. Should I just make sure everything is clean and use Holomar blue on this or use RTV or just use the gasket with no...

    Transfer box free play

Just to complete the story, replaced the input gear with a new cross drilled one - even reused the old bearings which were in good condition - and there is still some play but it doesn't clonk anymore and I am a happy bunny. Now to fix the crankhaft oil leak.

    Transfer box free play

Today I took the PTO cover off and had a look at the input gear/input shaft. Quick look on youtube and found I can just remove the input gear by lining up the intermediate gear and hey presto it's in my hand. The gearbox output shaft or is it the Transfer box input shaft looks OK to me. Bit of...

    Transfer box free play

I've replaced the front UJ that was shot but the play in the gearbox and transfer box needs further investigation. Anybody got a good LT77 gearbox and LT230 transfer box going spare?

now a problem with my lights

The common to main and dip not working is the light switch. Seperate fuses for left and right, main and dip so either all four fuses gone, or the earth on both sides all unlikely to happen at once:)

    Newbie alert

Thanks for the welcome. I just bought a 90 pickup converted to 200tdi, 88 model with mud tyres and 2in lift. Oh dear, what have I done! Chassis has no welding but will need a couple of plates next year. Bulkhead is reasonable, again maybe a plate next year. Once I fix a few minor problems should...

    temp sender help please

I'm in the same boat. Just looked up PRC6663 and this is the description. Water temperature sensor part number PRC6663. This fits the 2.5L Turbo diesel engine in the Land Rover Defender upto V.I.N WA159806. Please Note: This will not fit the Tdi models. So, is it the same thread but...

    Transfer box free play

Probably better to fix the front axle and UJ first and see the overall effect. I may be worrying about this for nothing.

    Transfer box free play

I didn't drive it the previous owner did (so he told me) and you are right, cornering was a nightmare but now sorted. Just trying to correct all the damage that may have been done. Front UJ is shot, front drive members look sloppy, not sure about the transfer box free play and the front diff...

    Transfer box free play

Hi, I've looked on this forum to see if this has been covered and I can't find any threads that cover it. I have just aquired a 90 with a stuck locked difflock which I have managed to sort out using this forum - thanks guys. Now to see what damage has been done as it has been driven on the...

    Newbie alert

Hi All, I have been around for a while and think it time to state my problem. I want a Defender 90, probably a 200/300/TD5, budget about £4500 all in for a reasonable car/van/pickup. Should I go for a newer TD5 that needs lots of work, or an older 200 that has had it all done? Am I being...
