    Tank Fuel Pump Template P38

Apologies for necroposting, just wanted to say thanks for this info. I just did this mod myself, and including doing the mod, it saved me hours compared how long it would have taken me to change the fuel pump by dropping the tank. Only one point I feel should be made - when you are cutting...

    Diesel Power Box

Indeed. A dump valve on a diesel engine would be a bit pointless, though, since there is no throttle - diesels always effectively run at WOT.

    Diesel Power Box

What you are describing is true for petrol engines, but it doesn't quite translate directly for diesels. Diesels always run lean, the less throttle, the leaner it is. Except at full throttle, diesels run at AFRs that would melt pistons on petrol engines.

    Greetings!

You have the pictures as your desktop wallpaper, no need to post them here. :p

    Diesel Power Box

I'm not talking just about reducing the amount of fuel - I am talking about increasing the amount of air (by increasing the boost) without reducing the amount of fuel. For any given amount of fuel, increasing the amount of air should produce more power (at least up to a point). Since under...

    Diesel Power Box

Well, a diesel always runs lean anyway, since there's no throttle - you only adjust how much fuel you squirt in (in the N/A case). With a petrol engine running at the sort of AFRs that diesels run at you would melt the pistons for sure, but diesels handle it just fine. Thus it is at least...

    Diesel Power Box

Does the engine have an electronically controlled turbo waste gate? If it does, the chances are that this "box" also ups the boost pressure limit, and if it doesn't increase the fuelling as much and thus makes the engine run leaner while breathing more air, then it could plausibly increase your...

    p38 2.5 lack of power

Dropping the tank is not that trivial when you don't have a ramp and have to do it with two trolley jacks with the car on axle stands. Triply so if it hasn't been removed in 15 years and all the bolts are seized up solid and prone to shearing off because nothing was copper greased, and when you...

P38 - Heavy duty lift pump?

It's a mix. In light of what you said on the other thread, though I'm wondering if the symptom is only obvious when the fuel level drops below 1/8 of a tank. Both times when this necessitated a tow truck was when the fuel level dropped to that level (just above where the warning light comes on)...

    p38 2.5 lack of power

From what I can tell, not all fuel filter heads are heated. The heated ones have 2 plugs, according to the parts manuals. The old part number with a single plug appears to have been superseded by the part number with two plugs. So can you please explain what each of the two plugs is for? The...

P38 - Heavy duty lift pump?

Awesome stuff, I'm glad that I'm not the only one seeing this problem and that the solution I was contemplating is sound. I'll try to find the photos. With all the bending, the panel would snap after a few changes anyway, I'll probably cut it out completely, cut a new oversized piece of metal...

    p38 2.5 lack of power

Absolutely not true. The lift pump runs most of the time. There is a pressure sensor in the fuel filter head (that's what the wiring loom plug on it is for), that cuts it out when the pressure is sufficient, but that never lasts more than a few seconds unless you are idling or coasting. Pull...

P38 - Heavy duty lift pump?

Is there such a thing? Alternatively, has anybody cobbled together a franken-solution combining a decent quality, submersible 12V pump with the P38 fuel sensor assembly? I got the car with 180K miles a year or two back, and the pump that came with it lasted about 40K miles. The replacement pump...

    p38 2.5 lack of power

Have you changed the fuel filter recently? If the lift pump (the one in the fuel tank has failed, it won't just struggle to start, it'll struggle to run at all. You might get a few minutes of idling out of it if it starts at all, but that's about it, and even that only if you have a full-ish...
