The usual culprit is one of the wheel sensors or an electrical connection in the wiring between the sensors and the ECU. Do a search on this forum and you'll find loads of threads about this subject. Keep your wallet under lock and key a little while longer :)

On mine (1997 300Tdi ES auto) the cruise control actuator is located on the drivers side in the engine bay close to the bulkhead/brake servo and the fuse box. In the picture it is in the bottom left corner. It doesn't have any electrical connections, just a vacuum pipe at one end and a cable at...

Not so. The diff lock locks the centre diff which effectively locks the front and rear prop shafts together. Both the front and rear axle diffs are still free/unlocked. This is an important distinction to make :)

Am I right in thinking that the wear problem only happens with manual gearboxes? I've not come across it with an auto-box.

It's extremely unlikely to be the clutch release bearing as it isn't subjected to high radial loads ~ and they tend to rumble when on their way out. Depressing the clutch takes a big load of the engine (and starter motor) on start-up ~ your not trying to turn half of the gearbox for a start ~...
