You can only recover from limp-mode with a re-start. Black smoke = over-fueling or too little air. I guess you miss air. Did you check the jubilee clips? and what do you mean by 'worse condition' and 'manky' ?

If you know anyone having a Nanocom .. Borrow it. Take it for a spin and read the turbo pressure at the point of going into limp mode. As mentioned by others, it could be a turbo pressure issue. Could also be a turbo hose jubilee clip which is not tight or broken. This may cause you to loose...

If the MAF is unplugged the ECU will use a standard setting. You can drive without the MAF .. No problem.

I believe something has caused your engine to go into limp mode when you pulled the trailer. After re-starting the engine the limp mode situation is reset. It could be fuel or air insufficiency as suggested by Sierrafery ..

Did you pull or push the wastegate? You need to push it - towards the turbo

A two inch lift will not improve your road handling or comfort. I suggest keeping standard rubber bushings (better comfort than poly), keep the springs if they are ok and invest in adjustable absorbers.
